1940s: Waterworks, Khyber Pass —

Coal powered pumping station near Ali Masjid. "A curious thing was the water supply for the Block Houses. This came by a pipeline laid over the hills from the pumping station below. The pipe could have been easily cut by the Afridis, but this was never done. They considered rules as necessary in warfare as we did. Look at them, they were using Chevrolet Belair 1958 as a taxi cum van. Whereas in big cities of those days Pakistan, that American Luxury car was status symbol.
