Chakdara Fort, now in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan, was built by the British in 1896, on the site of a sixteenth century Mughal fort. The position guarded the strategically important bridge over the Swat River and the routes into the Swat Valley and Chitral via the Lowari Pass. The fort was besieged during the Malakand Rising of 1897.

The fort is on a hillside to the left with the Indus River beside it to the right. Boats are moored alongside the pontoon bridge that spans the river. There is a road in the foreground, on which there are carts drawn by cattle, donkeys and people. A small town can be seen in the distance with hills beyond.

The fort was built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1581 to support his own wars in Afghanistan. It was held by the Sikhs in the 19th century, they had taken it from the Afghans in 1813. The Sikhs yielded it to the British in 1849.
