It was built in the late 16th century in the time of the Mogul Emperor Akbar. It was taken in 1813 by the Sikhs in the time of Ranjit Singh. Its significance became particularly apparent to the British after the 1857 Mutiny and they established a military cantonment there called Cambellpore ( Attock City ).

Jackie Kennedy At Khyber Pass, Year 1962.

This photo was taken at Torkham, which is located at the end of the Khyber Pass and the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was part of a visit to Peshawar for First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, wife of the 35th US President, John F. Kennedy. She is wearing a karakul. The President of Pakistan had taken his off and given it to Mrs. Kennedy earlier on and she proudly wore it tilted to one side during her visit.

Mrs Kennedy was received by Nawab of Kalabagh, then Governor of West Pakistan, Malik Amir Muhammad Khan, and was shown around by Brig Rakhman Gul (FF), then IGFC of Frontier Corps – Pakistan Army. Gul was a decorated veteran of the North African campaign of WWII. Washington hostess, Joan Braden, walks next to Governor Khan. The First Lady’s sister, Princess Lee Radziwill of Poland, walks behind. United States Ambassador to Pakistan, Walter P. McConaughy stands behind her.

They are having a laugh at the Khasadar who is trying to restrain a photographer from stepping into Afghanistan. After arriving from Rawalpindi she went on a guided tour of the interior of Peshawar’s Walled City followed by a visit to Jamrud Fort, Khyber Rifles Mess Landi Kotal and Torkham, Pak-Afghan border.

She stayed overnight as guest of honour at Governor House Peshawar and left for Lahore next morning.
