Obama's Message to Iranians

BBC News - Obama tells Iran of 'historic' opportunity

President Obama: "Together, we have to speak up for the future we seek"

US President Barack Obama has told the Iranian people that a deal to transform the relationship between the two countries could be within reach.

"We have the best opportunity in decades to pursue a different future between our countries," he said in a video message for Persian New Year.

Six world powers are negotiating a deal aimed at limiting Iran's nuclear activity, with a March deadline near.

The president conceded there were still "gaps" in negotiations but was hopeful.

"This moment may not come again soon," said Mr Obama in his message celebrating Nowruz.

"I believe that our nations have an historic opportunity to resolve this issue peacefully - an opportunity we should not miss."

If Iran's leaders agreed to a reasonable deal, then the country would be on a path to prosperity, he said.

Isolation awaited if agreement was not reached, he added.

John Kerry has represented the US in the nuclear talks

But the president has yet to convince the US Congress of the merits of a deal, and many lawmakers remain opposed to the easing of sanctions.

Earlier this month, 47 Republican senators warned Iran's leaders that any deal on Tehran's nuclear programme could be revoked once Mr Obama leaves office.

The move was condemned by the White House as an attempt to undermine the president's foreign policy.

According to unnamed officials talking to Associated Press news agency, the deal being hatched in the long-running talks will commit Tehran to a 40% cut in the number of machines it could use to make an atomic bomb.

In return, economic sanctions would be eased sharply and a UN embargo on conventional arms would be partially lifted.

The sticking points are thought to include the pace at which sanctions would be lifted, how long the deal will last and how much Iran's nuclear facilities will be open to inspection.

On Thursday, a cross-party letter signed by 360 members of Congress was sent to the president, reminding him that the lifting of permanent US sanctions against Iran would require new legislation from Congress.

Iran insists its nuclear programme is solely for peaceful purposes but members of the international community fear it has military ambitions.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met for the fourth consecutive day in Switzerland.

The six world powers - the US, China, Russia, UK, Germany and France - and Iran are hoping to reach a framework agreement by 31 March.

What a funny cute name! shomon mongol

Well, rest assured it is not a bad deal. That is for Iranians and Americans

I personally hope iran and america can reach a deal , an iranian dude on another thread said it could even lift the UN sanctions that were in place since clinton's time , that would isreally uplift the iranian economy and the state of iranian people . I would assume american cars would be manufactured in iran.

If things go perfectly, this deal is much more than that.

This deal and the way Obama is speaking would be more in line with US recognizing Iran's revolution, Iran's independent foreign policy and Iran's regional power status.

In effect, the area is going to be divided peacefully between Iranian sphere of influence and the American sphere of influence.

As Obama hints in the video, Iran will be able then to become sort of China/Japan of the ME. Powerful, independent with full international recognition.

This will be detrimental to traditional allies of US, namely Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Israel as it would reduce them to puppets facing a powerful independent Iran. No wonder, their behinds were on fire.

I really wish a good deal happens , sanctions be uplifted and the spirit of iranian people too , but that picture worries me ,

if a good deal happens the least my dad can send me to USA as a respectable international student , i won't be called a terrorist anymore

That picture is not worrying. It shows the depth of the talks. Salehi is a physicist. He is defending Iran's scientific rights and Zarif is an excellent diplomat, he is defending Iran politically. They have to coordinate alot of things naturally.

I thought you are already in Israel and have an Israeli passport which gives you direct access to US congress and the halls of power in US.

It doesn't take a Genius to figure this situation out mate , or a Daneshmand  , it was about time the USA recognized the IR as the legitimate inheritor of the past regime and the so called iranian opposition expats have lost steam , not only that , they are irrelevant to the iranian youth , so basically the nuclear talks are an excuse to open talks with the US

like in George Orwell's animal farm , all are equal , but some are isreally equal ...

Well, I have never been on a farm, so I wouldn't know.

George Orwell also had misjudged the stupidity and inherent corruption of humanity. The stupidity and corruption that counter-intuitively, do not allow for any farm to become as efficient as in 1984.

Every one wants its cut. Whether in Capitalism or in Communism or in IR.

But IR is more equal. isreally
