'Number of urban poor increases by 4.4 million in India'​

KOLKATA: Every year the number of urban poor increases by over 4 million in India due to the increasing slums, a top official of the Union Urban Development ministry said here today.

Stressing that the existing slums should be brought under reformation, Secretary of Union Urban Development ministry, Navin Kumar said, "It is necessary to involve private sector which can use the land for creating housing facilities on ownership, rental and rental ownership basis."

"Every year the number of urban poor increases by 4.4 million in India because of increasing slums," Kumar said at a seminar on 'Sustainable Citycon 2011' organised by Indian Chamber of Commerce here.

Services like credit enhancement, ensure flow of capital, reliable infrastructure like water availability, sanitation facilities, urban transportation, are needed for those who are in the Low Income Group in the urban sector.

Kumar said urban and town planning should be done with the help of a master plan and involvement of local bodies.

The Union Secretary said the Centre was evolving schemes on pilot projects under which large-scale maps were created.

"Under national urban development system, some cities are using the state-of art technology , like Indore, Mohali, Ahmedabad, Ludhiana," he said, adding regional development plans were being utilised in metropolitan cities, like Kolkata.

Not surprising, given the influx of people from villages into cities. We need to improve infrastructure and the standard of living in tier 2 and 3 cities so they can take a share of this burden.

You are right but there are some other facts also:

1.) There are large number of migration from Bangladeshi/Nepali etc. who constitute these poor.

2.) Because of MG-NREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) the migration have stopped to a very large scale.

3.) Because of the development in Bihar the migration from Bihar have also come to the negligible level.

4.) Because of MG-NREGA and Dev. in Bihar there is a huge shortage of labor in the cities. It is very tough to find labor and their wages have also sky rocketed.

5.) Last but not the least in the metropolitan cities those so called poor earns lot more to be called poor by the criteria of per capita earning/wages.

idk why our countries spends trillions on weapons n they dnt care about poor ppl.

i read 1 article that "if only USA don't buy weapons for ONLY one year, they can get rid of poverty in the whole world".

Then we need to be smart about controlling our borders. My point was that the influx of poor people is a significant contributor. As such, people have not lost jobs or had salary cuts in cities. It is possible that the high inflation rates resulted in redefining the poverty line, thus increasing the number of "poor". Regardless, we have a long way to go. The standard of life on non-poor in India isn't all that great either. These need to be tackled in the next 5-10 years to avoid an Egypt-like situation.

Do you have any data/source to back your claim up for I don't think that is true.
