Now, army wants to dump the indigenous Insas rifle

Josy Joseph / DNAThursday, February 18, 2010 1:37 IST

New Delhi: Yet another move by the Indian Army to dump indigenous equipment has come under sharp focus within the services and outside. The decision to look for a foreign replacement for the Indian small arms system (Insas) assault rifle — the standard rifle of an Indian soldier — came as the army is under attack from various quarters for its resistance to the Arjun tank.

The Insas and Arjun are indigenously made, and are among rare successes for India, which is heavily dependent on foreign firms for defence equipment.

The army wants to dump the Insas as it allegedly doesn’t measure up to its requirements. One of the arguments is that it does not instantly kill the enemy. But its defenders pointed out that it was not supposed to kill the enemy, but injure him so that in a battlefield more of his fellow soldiers are busy evacuating the injured.

A serving senior officer from the infantry said it was baffling that the infantry directorate has issued a global tender for replacing the Insas. “It has been designed precisely according to our quality requirements. If we have new requirements, we should ask the ordnance factory board to rework it, and not scrap the project,” the officer, who was involved in the induction of Insas, told DNA. He pointed out that the rifle had undergone several refinements, so it is now a “good weapon”.

Insas is a 5.56mm rifle, and performs as well as any in its class, argued its supporters. “It may not be as finished as others, but then you get an Insas for only Rs24,000. Its comparative guns are in the range of Rs1.25 lakh,” an official pointed out.

The global RFP (request for proposal) issued for a new assault rifle for the army stipulated that it had to be lighter than 3.5kg, making impossible for the Insas to even compete in the tender; an Insas weighs 4.1kg.

Its just as AK47 class guns, but for our army we need to develop even better rifle than INSAS..... So now we are in a modern era, we cannot use stuffs of the late 90's.... Although replacements are coming like tavour... Or zittara

. .
We could just sell our stockpile of Insas to ummm lets see who is a deserving cause ... :D and use the moneys to buy the new stuff

Nop, State Police will have them dude.... One stone 2 mangoes.... Hows that??

State Police should have their own requirements and I dont think that Insas meets those. I believe that they should be sold to a deserving cause . Now lets see who needs weapons. Bah Bah Bah ..excuse me while I sneeze :D

What? our state police need good rifles, INSAS will do just fine for them.... Atleast its better than lathi's and double barrel gun and Some SMG's...

I think it'll be much better if we try develop a rifle of our own. Something similar to the Steyr AUG A3 or IMI Tavor. We shouldn't overlook indegenous development.

Exactly dude.... We must not over look indegenous development .... DRDO has developed MSMC , but thats just an SMG, we need good quality rifles....

i had heard a few months ago this news...Indian Army wanted to get a new assault weapon..the reason was INSAS was specifically made for fight against regular forces..means pakistan army or chinese....

i.e.,its bullets were meant to wound than kill...so in a fight if an enemy soldier is hit..the enemy soldiers concentration will be on providing both aid to the wounded and also fight us...

but now-a-days our main fight is against terrorists who dont give a damn if his mates are injured or not..infact even an injured terrorsit is dangerous ...so IA wanted weapons which are deadly and kill the enemy with less number of bullets...

very correct and true! India should use indigenous technology! and I think Indians should learn from ToT just like what chinese do, they make good/better copies from ToT.

With indigenous products we can have greater numbers just like US/China, if we buy from outside we would get less in numbers! sometimes numbers matter the most!

Yeah those rifles should be handed over to Police, atleast terrorist and thieves will have some fear in their mind!

it'll be a poor idea to equip local police officers with INSAS............cause first these ppl need to be FIT, active, well-trained..........

imagine giving insas in d hands of some local police who abuse their authourity, they'll wreck havoc.........

Not true, never encountered any police man showing gun to harass common janta(people) though they might be corrupt! its only the stick (danda) which is misused the most.

Ofcourse only after training they used be handed over these guns everyone reckons that!:tup:

And still the army is lookin for 1.25Lakh gun, if so, why dont they make a 'finished' one then when army is not running on charitable donation. As long as they dont have anybody to compete with inside India, they will play the indigenous card for business. We need some serious competition in this area folks. Only competition can fine tune weapons.
