It was reported that 607 Institute has been developing a new active radar homing AAM (dubbed PL-15?) comparable to American AIM-120D and may have evolved from the earlier PL-12C/D design. The missile was seen being tested onboard a J-11B fighter. Compared to PL-12, the missile features stabilizing fins and tailfins with reduced wingspans, suggesting its design is optimized for internal carriage by the 4th generation fighters such as J-20 and FC-31. PL-15 also features an improved guidance system (including duplex datalink and new active/passive dual mode seeker with enhanced ECCM capability). The missile is thought to have a new dual pulse rocket motor in favor of a ramjet engine, giving it not only a longer range (~200km?) but also a relatively small body size. It appears PL-15 has superseded the PL-12 series as the primary LRAAM for the 4th generation stealth fighters. The latest rumor (September 2015) claimed that PL-15 was test-fired successfully from a J-16.

Air Combat Command chief Gen Hawk Carlisle says the computer-killing capability, which knocks out electronic equipment with bursts of high-frequency electromagnetic energy, is a “great capability” that will be fielded in small numbers initially with US Global Strike Command – the air force’s nuclear combat force.

In terms of air superiority weapons, Carlisle says the development of next-generation air-to-air missiles is also “an exceptionally high priority”.

Raytheon’s AMRAAM is the current go-to Western weapon for beyond-visual-range air combat, but new long-range missiles being fielded by Russia and China are a significant concern to the Pentagon.

Carlisle says outmatching the Chinese PL-15 air-to-air missile in particular is an “exceedingly high priority”.

“The PL-15 and the range of that missile, we’ve got to be able to out-stick that missile,” he says.


The air force is currently exploring a range of next-generation weapon concepts as it also pursues a sixth-generation fighter aircraft.

Speaking at a Feb. 12 media roundtable during the conference, Gen. Herbert Carlisle said Air Dominance 2030 supplants talk of a single sixth-generation F-X or F/A-XX to instead focus on multi-domain capabilities. He pointed to air, space and cyber capabilities as well as new munition loadouts.

The general said long-range standoff munitions and even new air-to-air missiles to replace the AIM-120D AMRAAM and AIM-9X Sidewinder would be included in the air superiority discussion.

He said the capabilities being developed by America's potential adversaries, such as the Chinese PL-15 air-to-air missile, are "incredible."

"I believe if we look at this as we have in the past, we can figure out how to change the game and be better at it," Carlisle said, adding that high-powered lasers and microwave weapons are technical areas showing great promise.

PL-10 HOBS IIR-WVRAAM

A dummy PL-10 AAM was fully extended outside the side weapon bay onboard the J-20 #2002 prototype. PL-10 (K/AKK-10?) is the new generation IIR-guided missile in the same class of AIM-9X, ASRAAM, A-Darter, AAM-5 and IRIS-T. It features an IIR seeker (containing a 128x128 focal plane array?) and TVC, giving the missile a 90° off-boresight angle and 50gmax load plus an excellent IRCCM capability against aerial target maneuvering at high-gs.

It also has a "lock-after-launch" capability, which could extend its range to BVR. Similar to AAM-5 and IRIS-T, the latest design (circa 2013) features 4 enlarged tailfins plus 4 narrow stabilizing strips attached to the mid-section of the missile body, which help maintain missile's manoeuvrability at the terminal stage after the solid motor stops working. The development of PL-10 started in 2005 and a test round was launched from the ground in November 2008.

The development was thought to have entered a new phase in 2010 after the missile was test-fired from a CFTE J-11B. PL-10 is expected to be carried by J-10B/C, J-11D and J-16 fighter bomber as well as internally by J-20 and FC-31stealth fighters which are still under development. The latest rumor (September 2015) claimed that a PL-10 was test-fired successfully from a J-10C.

Chief designer reveals data on China's new Luoyang PL-10 AAM

The Luoyang Electro-Optical Research Institute (LEOC) has largely competed development of its fifth-generation PL-10 short-range air-to-air missile (AAM), according to comments by the missile's designer on a Chinese TV show broadcast in late August.

The PL-10 AAM was first seen on Chinese websites in 2013 being carried on a retractable/covered pylon on the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) J-20 fifth-generation fighter. More recently it has been seen on the wingtip pylon of the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation J-11 fighter.

The TV report featured an interview with the PL-10's chief designer, Liang Xiaogeng. According to Mark Stokes of the Project 2049 research institute, Liang also served as the deputy chief designer of LEOC's PL-9C infrared/helmet-sighted AAM and as chief designer of the PL-12 self-guided medium-range AAM.

The report was unusual in that it provided significant historic and performance data about a new weapon before its unveiling at a major arms show or exhibition. For example, the report noted that the PL-10 weighs 89 kg, has a length of 3 m, and a range of 20 km. It has been in development for seven years, a prototype was completed in 2013, and since then has been test-fired 30 times.

The report also noted that the PL-10 has "world class" capabilities that include a "multi-element imaging infrared seeker with anti-jamming capabilities" and indicated that it is capable of high off-boresight attacks and has super manoeuvrability.

Images from 2013 and more recently confirm that the PL-10 uses thrust vectoring vanes in its motor exhaust. These, plus unique large aft fins with a slight forward sweep, likely confer super manoeuvrability.

Like comparable AAMs, the PL-10 probably also uses a new helmet-mounted display (HMD) sighting system

P.S. There were/are some concerns about A-darter due to indian intervention as they were offered to become partner in A-darter.

A-darter would become operational in 2016/2017. If India tries to block the deal of HOBS A-darter. We have a viable backup in case of PL-10 HOBS missile

Hi,

When that missile is integrated in pakistan---it will have severe after effects elsewhere. A total game changer when combined with a heavy air superiority fighter aircraft and a heavy strike aircraft.


This is a great news----uhmmhmhmm---I am just going to savor the news for a little while---.

When deployed---it will just turn the tables around----it is kind of a moment when the opponent says WTF just happened----did I just get molested---or what---why why why---.

So---basically---china is reaching the plateau---where it is going to break thru the glass ceiling of technology supremacy and BAM it is there----and people will say---what happened---did we miss something----. Yep----just the little lightening bolt that just went by.

Boy this missile will have a scary level of reach and what's more, it's Made in China. PAF will make sure they have it - you can bet on it.

Meanwhile, how long before (?)... :pop:
