Are you sure ? how is a much stronger material whose ore needs to be dug from earth and then smelted with chemicals and electricity is cheaper than wood which one can just drive in to a forest and cut and also weaker in strength.
In US steel can be anywhere from 11 to 2 times more expensive than wood.

Just my personal experience, all steel products are very cheap and wood product very expensive in China, a bed made of 实木 or solid wood, is several times more expensive than a bed made of steel.

Furniture wood will be expensive as you have to use hard wood of high quality but for framing generelly engineered soft woods are used - which are generally very cheap and also not as strong as steel.
