NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Knicks player Enes Kanter urged U.S. President Donald Trump to be more vocal about human rights in Turkey, after prosecutors in Istanbul requested the basketball player’s arrest and extradition over his ties to a U.S.-based cleric.

The 26-year-old center has been an outspoken critic of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and his human rights record. He was indicted by a Turkish court last year on charges of belonging to an armed terrorist group, which he denies.

Istanbul’s state prosecutor has sought an Interpol “red notice” to detain the basketball player and requested his extradition, a spokesman for the prosecutor’s office said on Thursday. Interpol declined to comment.

Kanter describes himself as a close ally of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, wanted in Turkey on suspicion of orchestrating a failed coup in 2016. Gulen denies the accusation.

Kanter said he had been receiving death threats because of his views and had decided to skip his team’s game in London on Thursday, prompted by fears he may be harmed by Turkish government agents or by Erdogan supporters.

“I feel like Trump definitely should talk about these issues with what’s going on in Turkey because there are lots of reports of people getting kidnapped, getting tortured in jail, getting killed,” Kanter told Reuters in New York City on Wednesday.

Turkish authorities have jailed some 77,000 people pending trial since the coup attempt, while 150,000 state employees including teachers, judges and soldiers have been suspended or dismissed in a crackdown on alleged supporters of Gulen.

Turkey says the scale of the crackdown is necessitated by the threat from Gulen’s network. Some 250 people were killed in the failed putsch when rogue soldiers commandeered warplanes, tanks and helicopters in a bid to seize power.

Amnesty International said in a report last year it had evidence that some of those detained since the attempted coup had been subjected to beatings and torture. Turkish government officials have denied accusations of torture in custody.

A representative of the Turkish embassy in Washington directed queries about Kanter’s comments to the Turkish foreign ministry. The foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In an email, Robin Sirin, an aide to Gulen, said the cleric was “unable to field interview requests right now due to ongoing health issues.”

Kanter said he had met with Republicans and Democrats in Congress but has yet to speak to anyone in the Trump administration and would welcome time with the president to discuss human rights in Turkey.

The White House declined to comment.

Erdogan has said human rights in Turkey have improved in the 16 years he has been in power.

The 6-foot-11 (211 cm) Kanter said he had decided not to travel with his team to London for Thursday’s game against the Washington Wizards at 2000 GMT (3 p.m. EST) before the report of the extradition request. He said he would watch the game from his New York City apartment.

“I’m going to put my double-zero jersey on and feel like I’m sitting on the bench with my teammates and I’m going to cheer for them,” Kanter said. “I want to feel like I’m in the game.”

The Knicks lost 101-100 to the Washington Wizards in the NBA London Game at the O2 Arena.

Seems Erdogan learned nothing from the American pastor indecent and is determined to publicly embarrass himself again.

No one in the US is going to extradite a 26 year old NBA player to him.

Sinan, who is funding Mr gulen? This is a mystery.
There's no mystery here. Turkish conservatism before 2000 had a more moderate approach to Iran and had anti-Israel-based approach. National Vision ( Milli Görüş ) movement was completely disbanded in 96 and a favorable environment for the AKP emerged. Although the FETO movement, whose seeds were planted in the 1970s, had the opportunity to penetrate deeply in the military and bureaucracy after the 80 US coup, it became the main vehicle of Gladio in the 1990s. FETO associated with the US's Gladio network in Turkey. This issue is directly related to the destruction of the National Vision movement in the 90s and the upbringing of the AKP. In this way, they achieved rapid growth in the military, the bureaucracy and economic sphere.

Gulen movement is a structure which the US intelligence agency supports in the soft-power concept. Like a Trojan horse. When this concept up to destroy Turkey, the United States opted to nourish by this parallel state structure. They thought, like in Egypt, that the people could be oppressed, but their plans turned upside down. Now only left with the Psy-ops of media outlets and artificial figures.

As we both know the story is critically different from the one above, no intention to go into detail here; however, ready to talk about it in Turkish.

Since his years playing for Turkey in the European Youth Championships (where he dominated) I am following his career and I can tell you that this guy had the potential and has the tools to be an NBA star. Even now he is one of the best offensive players on his position but he is totally f*cked in the head and is a person that it is very easy to manipulate. I judge about that by his career choices and the way he acts.

I won’t be surprised if he is brainwashed and I am sure that he is a tool in someone’s hands. I feel a bit sorry for him because if he was not part of that sect and had better advisors he could have been a star and a very important piece for Turkey’s National team.

From what i read so far it is far than clear to me that Fethullah Gülen was involved in the coup in any major way. I have read old sort of theories on who is responsible for the coup. Varying from army units that had issues with where turkey democracy and human rights are heading , to a false flag attack staged by the goverment itself so Erdogan can tighten his grip on the Turkish people.

Personally I don't know which theory is more convincing. But i find it strange and unreliable that so many here, are too happy to buy into the Gülen theory , while there are many other options , and no clear evidence that it is indeed the case.

In short Gülenists. They were a very huge organization....they had banks to gold mines....it would took a very long time explain their income but you can think that they had a finger in everywhere, not in Turkey but also in different countries.

800 Schools and Universities
100 Private Dormitories
1000 Associations
200 Media (Newspaper, Magazine, Tv stations)
500 conglomerate
Total capital: $25-50 Billion.

In 160 countries.

For all Turks there is no question about who was behind the coup, be it pro-Erdogan or anti-Erdogan...we all know Gülen was behind the coup. You might not believe it, as you might not had a detailed research about Gülen Organization.
