Defence Minister A K Antony said the Indian Navy will get seven more indigenous stealth frigate warships to give the service a stealthy power punch. The INS Sahyadri, the last of the three first-generation indigenous stealth frigate, was recently inducted into the Navy. The first two—INS Shivalik and Satpura—were commissioned in the last two years.
“Contract negotiations are going on for seven more stealth frigates, four of which will be made at Mazgaon Dock Ltd in Mumbai and three in Garden Reach shipbuilder’s yard in Kolkata. Once the negotiations are completed, we will take it to the Cabinet,” Antony said. Current economic slowdown will not have any impact on the capital budget for the Defence Ministry.

The next generation warships to made under approximately Rs 50,000 crore Project-17A will have more improved stealth features to further reduce radar signatures and under water radiated noise. They will also have slick appearance and multifunction radar to further bring down detection chances. The weapon platform in the seven ships of next generation will also be compacted in the P-17A ships. They will be armed with an advanced surface-to-air missile being developed jointly by India and Israel as well as Brahmos cruise missile.

The weapon system will be flush-deck mounted that will allow vertical launch of missiles from under the deck, said a navy official involved in designing the ships. Among the three first-generation stealth frigates, the Sahyadri has the minimum number (less than 50) ship liability defects, which will be corrected by the shipyard in the next one year. For Shivalik, the corresponding number was 140.

Five warships

Antony said going by the current order book position every year, the Navy will receive five warships and the service had become a role model for the Army and Air Force when compared on the level of indigenisation in the three services.
All the three new indigenous stealth frigates—Shivalik, Satpura and Sahyadri—will be part of the Eastern Naval Command in Vishakhapatnam, whose strategic importance is growing in the light of China’s expanding prominence in the Indian Ocean region.

Limited role

Asked about India’s role in the South China Sea where both countries had a face-off in the last two years, Antony said India has a limited role there as far as the security of the sea lanes are concerned. But New Delhi is in favour unhindered passage of its ships and freedom of navigation in international waters.

indigenisation of warships is the way to go for india we should keep on increasing indigenous content untill we achieve atleast 90% level...:enjoy:

now lets just pray there r no more delays.....

.
Does anyone know just how indigenous the radar will be on these ships?

I hear that the SAM will not be fully indigenous.

. .
Antony is Just talking about P-17A

Construction of it is supposed to start by end of yr in Mazagaon Docks and by march 2013 in GRSE

Most probably it will have Aegis System for radar(USA)

N the SAM will be Barak 8 (a joint venture between israel n india)

Not looking very good for India as apart from the hull, pretty much everything else will be imported.

Most of the sensor systems and electronic countermeasures will be from BEL, India. So is the Anti-shipping and surface missiles.

And Barak 8 is a joint project, so the weapons will be manufactured in India.

OK.

Let us say that from next decade, India will be able to build completely indigenous warships.

Probably, DRDO does have AESA radar for both land based and airborne platforms, but maybe that's not miniaturized enough to fit in a stealth frigate. A decade time seems to be well enough for further research and development in critical technologies field.

Even though, UK still using US Aegis AESA radar onboard their stealth frigates and destroyers.

There is nothing like 100% indigenous even china uses american engines to power its ships n americans often uses chinese components

n its not just that india is building the hull of the ship there r lot many thing which r involved with that. The point here is that these ships will take india to the next level in manufacturing :

1.for the first time india will be using modular shipping technique (which is very important to make big ships in less time):enjoy:

2.the design of these ships is among the best in the world.these ships will have covered
mooring deck and flush deck
mounted (VLM) weapon
systems. The number of
antennae on the ship will be
reduced by using a multifunctional radar.
this will help india master in designing n building stealth ships.

3.the SAM Barak 8 is a joint venture so we'll be not only producing them but also exporting to the interested parties

4.Brahmos is also a joint venture missile to be fitted on these ships n will be manufactured in india itself.

5.these ship will also be the first indian ships to be mounted with Aegis system which the best in the world.

So, u can see majority of the things r either produced in india or joint venture(Means they will be manufactured in india n not being imported as suggested by u):argh:
At last i would say we r a developing nation we can not manufacture everything on our own but we'll keep on increasing indigenous content in our ships n other systems.
n the day is not far when we'll be manufactuing almost every major n minor component on our own.

This is just the beginning n not the end....:yahoo:

.
We should induct as many stealth ships as possible , while making sure submarine fleet doesnt go too low . For this we can take support of Russia and France while keeipng most of the content indigenous .

.
wow good news.

As two shipyards will be constructing them i think they wont take 11yrs like shivalik class to get inducted may be a 1 or 2 yr delays but they will be inducted in this decade only.
When will 1st ship roll out......????
