Navy to build new base in Porbandar

ANDHINAGAR: The Navy will build a fully equipped naval base on the Porbandar coast in an effort to increase security along the 1600-km-long Gujarat coast and beyond in Maharashtra and Goa. The new base will be named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, sources said.

The Navy's decision was communicated to Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel by Rear Admiral Ashok Kumar who met the former here on Wednesday. The discussion between Kumar and the chief minister covered a host of security-related issues and the Navy's operations in Gujarat.

The rear admiral discussed the Navy's future plans along the Gujarat coast, including plans for infrastructure facilities and a jetty. Sources said the chief minister asked him to help the Gujarat police improve their skills in marine policing. She also discussed the safety of Gujarati fishermen who are often caught by Pakistani marines near the international maritime border.

will that be kindda forward naval base for Pakistan?
Doesn't look like FOB. As need mentions Gujrat does have pretty long coastline while nearest major naval base is in mumbai. If a full fledged base is established it will help navy to respond to any crisis in pretty less time while it will make possible the short range ships access to middle east. As new IAF base is coming near and INS naval air station is nearby it will be good multiply our efforts in this sector.. I do believe Gujrat should have 1 major naval base for adequate security measures with 3 FOBs.

I do not agree...Coz if they want to restrict the role for the above said reason then they would have strengthen ICG for that matter.....So for very this reason i can see major plan ahead....would love to see how things will unfold in future :pop:

Friend where are they restricting the role. Whatever naval base India has, these are shared by navy as well as coastguard although few coastguard stn have been made. And not all Indian naval ships maintain 3 month on stn routine. Many of them including patrol vessels and corvettes make round based patrols. This major naval base may help them in maintaining more on station patrol than spending lot of time in transit. Although it may seem similer to FOB but FOB is only helpful when major naval base is nearby. In this case consider if mission is to patrol northern Arabian sea then a ship has to make transit from mumbai itself. It will take much time to reach on station. But if a major base is nearby they are able to respond in pretty less time thus increasing on station capability.

Good for security along Gujarat coast and our interests in adjacent Arabian sea. Anyway Porbandar already has a naval air base.

So close to Pakistan is a bad bad idea! :fie:
I think its pretty good move on our part. We have full fledged IAF naval support ops there plus we got naval UAV ops there for long range. And it is still far from their main base Karachi so their surfaces fleet doesn't have much chance against us. While submarine wise they have got pretty good boats. Those boats do pose good level of threat against Mumbai harbour, so should we shut down our Mumbai harbour. No, we should bolester our capability in ASW. There it will help in asw a lot, we can field our frigate, corvettes and patrol vessels which can gather much needed signature of their submarine fleet much easily as compared to doing the same task from Mumbai harbour. All blue navy powers do have big naval bases on their fringe border. I say lets do it.

yes we got air cover from IAF mainstays as well as our naval UAVs there.

May be they want it to be like INS Dwarka (a forward outpost nearer to Pakistan):-

INS Dwarka has been assigned the following roles:-
(a) Defence of Port Okha and examination services at Port Okha/ entrance to deep water channel.
(b) Provide infrastructure, Op Logistics and diving support to naval ships.
(c) Maintaining surveillance of North Arabian Sea and Deep Water Channel.
(d) Naval Reporting Officer and detailing duties of port under jurisdiction.
(e) Administrative/ logistic support to all units at Okha, Coast Guard Station, Okha and communication cover and diving support to Coast Guard ships, hovercrafts, ICG boats based at Port Okha.
(f) Liaising with IAF, Army, civil and Police authorities to implement security measures at Port Okha.
(j) Command and control of additional manpower/ resources when augmented by higher formations.
(k) Conduct of Gujarat Marine Police training.
(l) Coordination of patrolling by Sagar Prahari Bal.

But still i wish for NB in GJ.

I think with lot of strategic and economic assets in the area, the development is quite significant. apart from that this will also help in keeping watch on maritime trade route to Arabian peninsula.
