Khulna, Oct 8 (bdnews24.com)—Khulna Shipyard has built first patrol craft for Bangladesh Navy ushering in a new era of coastal defence.

Foreign Minister Dipu Moni handed over the ship to Navy at a programme at Khulna Shipyard on Monday.

Chaired by Managing Director of the state-owned shipyard Commodore Riaz Uddin Ahmed, the programme was also attended by Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral ZU Ahmed.

Addressing the programme, Dipu Moni said: "Bangladesh wants to capture a portion of world's shipbuilding market. The government has undertaken a long-term plan to build a well-organised navy. The government is determined to add submarine to the Navy soon."

She also said the ships made by Khulna Shipyard would play the vital role in keeping the maritime boundary safe.

The 50.4-metre long, 7.5-metre wide and 4.1-metre deep warship can travel 23 nautical miles per hour.

The ship, armed with two 37 millimetre cannons and two 20 millimetre anti-fire craft guns, can move seven days at a stretch.

The warship has been built in one and a half years with technical assistance from China.

Officials said building of a patrol craft locally costs Tk 540 million against its import cost of Tk 1 billion.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Mar 5 last year inaugurated the construction of the warship and a training school for Navy.

Khulna Shipyard is also building five more patrol ships of the same type for the Navy.

So wee are making corvets or frigates next :) ?

According to commodore motiur we are going to build large patrol crafts in the future. Here is a quote from sami's previous thread

He said two large patrol craft are being constructed in China for Bangladesh Navy. This kind of patrol crafts will also be constructed in the country in the future, Motiur said

Even though we may be able to build LPCs i doubt we will be able to make frigates in the near future. Frigates are warship which weighs 2000+ tons. Khulna shipyard currently does not have the ability to build ship that big, it can only build up to(less than actually, due to old equipment) 2000 tons in dead weight.

What does that supposed to mean :what: ?

Inshallah BD's first national frigate (hopefully) will be shylet class.:azn: But I prefer naming after great personalities of our country like shahazalal/titumir, khiliji/shirajudhaullah/zia/Fazlul haq class etc.

So far I know KSY acquired new land away from Khulna near Chalna (probably) to build big tons ships, so bigger ones will not be impossible provided they have the required tech.

According to iajdani people from Khulna are special thugs...big examples are Hasina/Abuilla :P .

Land is not the problem here. The problem is with the berthing facilities. The berthing facilities are quite old and small thus aren't able to build big ships. With the current amount of land, but with good berthing facilities 2000+ tons ships can be easily built.

Furthermore, the rupsha bridge prevents big ships from being built as it wont be able to pass underneath it.

Hasina isnt from khulna -.- Anyway the south has always been better than the north :P

I meant to say big infrastructure for KSY is being developed there near Chalna so that big ships can be built .

Construction time was pretty quick, I am impressed. Lets see if they can complete the rest as quick and then build something bigger, inshallah.

A corvette in the 1500 to 2000 ton class would be brilliant.
