What's new

Navy asked for direct purchase of two Amur-class subs from Russia ?

China did buy modified Amur called Lada from Russia, right ?

Amur is cheap and helps us gain another model of Sub's, best practices of which can be integrated with our local design.

.
Wrong move.I think they should accept DCNS offer of two Scorpene submarines as a quick stop-gap measure.Russians never deliver anything on time for e.g Talwar Class & Vikramaditya.

But the issue is that French stuff is too costly.

Its a great Idea.

Amur is cheap and is a quick acquisition.

Recently China brought 4 Amur from Russia and India needs to know the capabilities of thh Amur to counteract any potential threats. Buying and operating the Amur is the best way to know this.

What?

China bought 4 submarines from Russia?

How come I who is in the know don't know?:azn:

Untill our Defence Ministry says so,discard all media speculations, especially if the “news” is Russian originated。

Will you?:D

There was news about china negotiating to buying Lada by reputed news media. Maybe the deal is not signed yet.

Maybe India will buy the new Kalina class that is being developed instead of Amur. Itis also likely that India might buy 2 Amurs and then invest in the Kalina class. That seems more likely.

But the issue is that French stuff is too costly.
Constant delays in delivering projects results in cost overruns.Again take example of Vikramaditya, due to continuous delays India had to pay an additional US$1.2 billion for the project, more than doubling the original cost.
Amur is new platform & not in service with any nation yet so there is risk of delays and cost overruns on the other hand four Scorpene subs are already in service with two nations. Also operating different types of subs means more logistical burden on navy.It is more likely cost of Scorpenes will be affordable for us in longer term perspective.

Sōryū-class submarines ??? something from the Japs ?

I myself feel that we should co-op with some other countries(either France,Germany or Japan) to develop next gen conventional subs.Japanese Subs are great, but their arms industry's close relation with USA makes it vulnerable as it may be possible that some of the sub systems are co developed by US companies and so on..

japs would be happy for a JV and i don't think India would have hard time getting a nod from US
both Japs and India need to expand their military, a win win for both

not so easy sir.USA has a bad habit to barge into some projects which is somewhat related to their defence tech.its not Russia we're talking about.Japan can sell Soryu to Australia as it is their ally.but for India,it is something they never tried.plus,JV with Japan will not go unnoticed by its neighbours.when a simple joint exercise can make them rattle, imagine what a JV can do.

.
it is better to have one type of sub rather than multiple
it would be easier to mentain
i would rather have 14 scorpenes replacing the 10 kilos and 4 U209
rather than having a mixed and match fleet of scorpenes and Amurs

i don't think US has a diesel sub for India, IMO US would want india to counter balance asia and might give in the subs
we should be more concerned about India's self reliance then see who gets pissed off

Lets wait and see if that request is really true or not, I have some big doubts about it, since it neither would be logical to procure a Russian sub that is not operational yet, or when you could get stop gap Scorpenes from France directy too, nor would it be a fast to induct sub, since we don't have it in the fleet yet (more upgraded Kilos would make more sense if it needs to be Russian subs). Not to mention that with the recent incedents, the Russians should not have the best support within IN, so such a request should be more than doubtful.

@Genesis
I think, there is more than meets the eye here. Both the subs which these may replace were Kilo class. The Amur, at the end of the day is an evolution of the Kilo. Maybe, there were certain things in those upgrades which were specific to the Kilo. And hence, makes the Amur a natural choice. This at the most an educated guess. I don;t think, this is going to be linked to the 75I.

It has to be linked with the P75I. Even if the Amur is an evolution of the Kilo, it isn't the same, therefor commonality will be less and you don't buy just 2 x Amurs with different logistics and then go to order more Scorpenes or even something else. If they go for Amurs, they have to go for it in the P75I too, otherwise neither the logistics nor the possible benefits of cost or customization would play in favour for the deal. But again, the most logical and easy to induct solution would be additional Kilos, or Scorpenes delivered by Russia or France. No additional logistics, training or spares, since the earlier is already operational, while the other is now being set up anyway. So it would be very questionable to choose Amurs now, but then IN took a very questionable decision with Scorpenes too, so lets see.

Can be media speculation & why don't they order Scorpenes in P-75I to this will reduce logistics costs & many other costs if we choose another submarine.Navy should focus on reducing the diversity in Subs,to keep costs down instead it is opting for 2-3 of every class like a kid in candy store.
