Basic description
SARAS is a twin turboprop powered multi-role aircraft. The basic configuration resembles very closely the platform of the Embraer/FMA CBA 123 Vector which never went into production. SARAS is designed to take-off and land on short semi-prepared runways. It has advanced design features like modern state of the art avionics, carbon fiber composite control surfaces, low drag wing, low cabin noise because of rear-mounted turbo-prop engines in pusher propeller configuration. Interior of SARAS is fully pressurized for passenger comfort. SARAS is capable of flying upto a maximum speed of 550 Km/ hour at a cruise altitude of 7.5 km.

Airframe
Saras airframe is mainly made of carbon composite. Composite surface helps to keep the aircraft light at the same time strengthens the structure. Composite surface are less prone to fatigue and corrosion, hence low-maintenance and higher availability.

Cockpit
Saras prototype variant is fitted with conventional semi-glass cockpit. Upfront panel consists of two large multi function displays, four small displays and conventional dial-pointers. Control input device consists of two typically placed conventional duel-hand stick and two separate throttle for each engine placed at central pedestal.

Avionics
NAL has integrated a contemporary avionics suit for the Saras aircraft meeting all performance and safety certification requirements. Saras avionics suit is fully digital and conforms to FAR 25 specifications. Nearly 4500 test were conducted to declare the Saras avionics suit fully functional. NAL has also designed and developed a software for stall warning system. [6]

Engine
PT-1 incorporate PT6A-66 turbo-prop engine of 850 hp class. However PT-2 have been fitted with more powerful PT6A-67A of 1200 hp class and new propellers of larger diameter. This is particularly done to meet the stringent climb gradient requirements under one engine failure condition as stipulated by Federal Aviation Regulations 25 (FAR-25) of USA.[7]

Range
The range varies from 500 km to 2000 km depending upon the payload (500 km for 14 pax, 800 km for 12 pax, 1400 km for 8 pax, 1700 for 6 pax and 2000 km ferry range with only one crew).

Variants
Saras is a multi-role light transport aircraft ideal for commuter transport(14 seats), executive transport(6-8 seats), light package carrier, remote sensing, aerial research services, coast-guard, border surveillance, air ambulance

even the iaf and navy has shown positive interest in saras . great going india . another aeronautical achievement after dhruv .

^^^ well if he dig it out ... atleast brief us wat happened to that project????

AFAIK there were only 2 prototypes made, one crashed killing the pilots, and the program was in limbo for a while, last I read, the first prototype was undergoing modifications to it's flight control systems, and I'm not sure but I think they're working on the final production standard model as well, incorporating the modifications made on the first prototype, with flight testing speculated for the end of the year.
