Frigates

Myanmar Navy has started its modernization program in 2001 in an attempt to replace older ships and equipments. In 2012, Myanmar Navy has taken delivery of 2 Type 053H1 class frigates from PR China. These 2 ships were upgraded extensively by Myanmar Navy. Upgrades to frigates include the replacing of HY 2 anti ship missiles by more lethal C 802 missiles and installing of new sensors. First indigenous frigate, F11 Aung Zeya has entered service in 2011 and took part in joint exercise with Indian Navy ships off Visakhapatnam in early 2013. Second ship of Aung Zeya class, F 12 Kyan Sit Thar, enters service in 2012 and which is the Myanmar Navy’s first stealth frigate. Third ship is under construction at Myanmar Navy Dockyard (Thilawar) and expected to enter service in 2014. Myanmar Navy plans to build 6 frigates. Myanmar Navy frigates combine Russia, India, China and western weapon system. These ships are equipped with Kh-35E anti-ship missiles, Oto Melara 76 mm Super Rapid Cannons, AK-630 6-barrel 30 mm CIWS guns and Chinese ASW rockets and torpedoes. Radars and electronic systems are mainly from Bharat of India.
Light Frigates and FAC(Stealth)

In early 2011, two corvettes, 771 and 772, are upgraded to Light Frigates by installing C 802 SSM, SAMs, sonar, RBU 1200 ASW rockets and new surface and air search radars. The most significant development for Myanmar Navy is the launching of new FAC(Stealth)(pennant number P 491) which is 49 meter long and armed with 4 x C 802 SSMs and a single AK 630 CIWS. Second ship of this class is already under construction and expected to be completed by early 2014. Myanmar Navy plan to build 10 ships of this class. Twenty 45-meter class FACs(Guns and Missiles) are backbone of Myanmar navy but Myanmar Navy experienced these ships are too small for new weapons and electronic systems. This is the main reason for initiating of 49 meter class FAC(Stealth). Older Hainan class FAC (Submarine Chaser) will be degraded to Category B reserve by 2016.
Submarines

Myanmar Navy intended to establish a submarine fleet by 2015. Some Myanmar naval officers are undergoing submarine training in Pakistan. Although Pakistan is willing to sell its aging Agosta 70 submarines, Myanmar Navy shows very little interest in these submarines and instead, seeking to buy more modern ones. Myanmar Navy is in the process of negotiating to buy 2 Kilo class submarines from Russia. In June 2013, during his visit to Russia, Myanmar Army chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and Russian officials discussed to buy Kilo submarines and Kamov ASW helicopters for new frigates.

our economy is twice of Myanmar but Myanmar is spending more in defence than us

they ordered 1000 BTR-3s from Ukraine,i heard after a few were built ukraine stopped send parts to assemble because they won't be able to run them.

Also they have a larger army than us however with this much equipment and a large army, 2.4 billion is still not enough to run it effectively.

Those frigates they are making will be on par with our refurbished type 053h2s and no ship of theirs can go head to head with our ulsan class and future USCG cutter.

Our padma patrol vessels are bigger than their FACs.

Also this is likely for show like when they bought 50 Hinds which i have never seen to date.

I tell you,this sort of shopping spree will make their military ineffective.Even with a bigger defence budget,it needs to be invested properly.What about bases,infrastructure training??? If bangladesh wanted to we could buy all that but we wouldn't be able to use it properly like our Migs when we rushed ahead with the purchase

well, just discovered this thread..... :O

Myanmar is currently in the process of building up quite a few military bases along the long gas and oil pipelines that connect Arakan coast to China border.... Arakan is now one of the most important regions of Myanmar, with massive gas fields and two deep-sea ports (funded by China and India).... add to these, other investments utilising new energy resources..... the point is, Arakan now requires more protection and the way Arakan was designed by God, it mostly has to be defended from the sea side.... the land side is almost totally covered by Arakan mountains....

of all these plans, the thing that most worries me is the submarine.... its not for counter insurgencies; neither is it there to counter the Indian or Chinese navies.... the first thing that comes to mind is Bangladesh...... hard to find another reason for getting a submarine....

see, if we start an ethnic cleansing in our country and push several hundred thousand people across the border into India, you may not like it.... and after that, if we refuse to get the refugees back for 15 years (and regularly push more refugees), you may not like that too.... isn't it?
in fact, this kind of a situation would constantly keep you on your toes near the border areas.... am I right?

then, if I send my naval ships into disputed maritime territory claimed by you and us, you may not like that either....
then, after we are forced to pull back our naval ships from the disputed area, if we start a military buildup near the border areas, would you sit back and watch?...... probably not....

I think you got the problem we're facing there....

Bangladesh Navy had a plan for submarines since at least 2004.... but it wasn't in the priority list.... the navy got priority after the November 2008 naval confrontation with Myanmar.... and the submarine program was supposed to be implemented in around 10 years.... but after news of Myanmar Navy personnel being trained in Pakistani sub base emerged, the program got acceleration....

Myanmar is doing well now(BIG TIME), lot of difference in 1 year!

Their economy is booming now as they have made their market open to world partially.

Moreover, US and EU had lifted many sanctions against Myanmar.
