Mustafa Jabbar: Bangladesh will lead the 4th industrial revolution

Bangladesh DOESN'T have Industrial shortcomings, you are buying and swallowing Indian troll propaganda lock, stock and barrel. Don't be a part of foisting misinformation just because Indian trolls say it
Do elaborate?
Apart from garments, ceramic and shipbuilding (and maybe IT) what other export oriented industries do we have?
and what sort if "heavy industry" do we have, local and export oriented?

Nah in Bangladesh as far I know, all steam engines are replaced by diesel engine .
Just few old cargo ships still exists that operate by steam engine, and we call them steamer and they look horrific lol .

We should first focus building train car and such thing that peoples use so we can decrease import.

Here is one piece steamer . Search "steamer Bangladesh" for more pictures.

Im talking about steam turbines though....its used in vast majority of base-load powerplants (nuclear, thermal etc). Prime mover is technical wrong word to use I agree (I was speaking more in jest)....working fluid is more accurate.

Obviously reciprocating steam engine (as prime mover) is no longer relevant given the efficiencies but especially bulk needed.....but Rankine cycle has much relevance to modern day economy given it has massive economies of scale when bulk is no longer that large of an issue (i.e static power plants etc). In fact how Rankine cycle application has evolved and refined over the decades is an interesting subject by itself.

Indian trolls who claim Bangladesh is undeveloped because we don't make cars, trucks and industrial machinery are banking on the ignorance of Bangladeshi PDF posters. Things are not made on patriotic whims, they are made (and factories are set up to make them) because it makes business (and financial) sense and promoters can make solid profits.
right, that does make sense. we don't have the local demand to justify setting those up.

But, it is not possible for you or me to make @TopCat, or your favorite Billu Miah to understand the meaning of starting from Zero. Any country has only a single path to move forward. It is to start from the bottom of technology.
But, the Billu Miah like people thinks BD is already this and that and therefore it is below its esteem to start from the bottom. The country is infested with this kind of people with superficial knowledge. Since BD is unable to start from Zero it will not achieve the goal of reaching even Ten, let alone 4th industrial Bakwas.

Stupid @TopCat

Well you don't have to move through it sequentially per se...just having gone through the process of the earlier ones gives you the necessary buffer/momentum/expertise to better invest into the next one.

But those that didn't go through it all, need to come up with new ways to catch the bus this time given you are right to large extent too (i.e to make effort where appropriate across the board on the earlier stuff so you have as much spring board on the general iterative process).

It is not a simple thing that babu and miah make it out to be...i.e just "train ppl" in "knowledge economy"...in some numbers way and it will automatically happen. You need to hedge everywhere and invest/focus well...that is where private sector and FDI comes in (and minimum govt intervention into it)...but BD has to be ready to not care about BAL and BBS feelings/"data" so much...but just take it on the chin, adjust to reality and move forward.

But it seems to me everyone just wants to indulge BAL narrative (using BBS control, election commision control etc etc) on economy/progress...in some emperors new clothes story kind of thing (whatever the industrial revolution being talked about). Oh well, that way I guess everyone has to learn things hard way again in the end.

If previous "antiquated industrial stuff" is so bad and can be so ignored or should be bypassed....why does BD depend on RMG after all? Is it not from earlier era? Why not simply do clean cut jump into services/finance/IT only?

.
It is bit too ambitious. However the goal is sacred and high. I wish a very good luck to Bangladesh.

I'd be extremely shocked if steamers are still running any where in Bangladesh. They are very expensive to maintain.

The last steam engines in local riverine steamer service ('Rocket' paddle steamers on Dhaka-Barisal route, namely 'PS Masud' and 'PS Tern') were converted to diesel power in the early 90s. They are run for nostalgic value only - as they are not safe to ride anymore and take eighteen hours or more to reach Barisal from Dhaka.

Conversely you can take a catamaran nowadays and you can get there in six hours.

I just find it amusing about so called instantly sprouted 'experts' from neighboring countries - who barely have even visited Dhaka at all, commenting about our state of economy and dispensing unwanted non-contextual advice. Self importance is such grand delusion. :-)

Now I can accept friendly advice, but derision coming from inhabitants of another third world country is just amusing.

Do they know the meaning of 'Shonibarey bhikkha deina - maaf koren'.

Shameless bunch.

ICT minister acknowledges that Bangladesh missed 1st, 2nd and 3rd industrial revolution. 4th industrial revolution is all about big data, data science, iot and ai. To accomplish this you don’t need to build steam engine. With solid knowledge and understanding on math, stat, programming and networking you can accomplish it. Bangladesh has the potential to achieve this.
Can you tell me what components the societies of Japan, Germany, and other industrially highly developed countries are lacking that they have been continuously working on the 4th industrial revolution since the 1980s and it is a long way to go?

The 4th revolution needs support from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd industrial revolution. Read more about it and tell me how a country like BD with just a backward peasant background can do something in a few days that the developed countries have been spending 40 years to achieve, but is still a long way to reach the target? You are proposing to build a castle in the high sky.

Yes 4 steamer is still running, but with diesel engine now.
This article says that. And surprisingly they also do not sink in water even in storm, atleast this article says that!
Old is gold!!!

Steve Jabber is a minister, that is a laughable thing to begin with. More laughable than the headline.
Welcome back :-)

Now, by saying a few futuristic but unrealistic projections this Jabber guy is trying to draw attention from his mentor Haseena who has already prophesied BD will shortly send Mars mission and build the jet planes. The new BD ministers are competing with each other by talking on the big unachievable things.

There is no question of regret if the steamers run by coal/diesel is manufactured in Bangladesh by its own people with their own hands. But, you guys want BD to look superficial rich by importing better-looking foreign goods. Because steam engines or things like that have not been produced in the country, therefore, it is limping in two legs and I do not think the limping will ever cease. As far as I know, all the steamers (coal/diesel) are imported, and you guys think it is progress towards Golden Bangladesh. Bloody hypocrats!!

I wonder if stupid guys like you have ever seen a locomotive. Your own specialty is to copy from the internet and paste at random. Have you ever noticed how large is the steel components of a locomotive combined together to function as the puller of a heavy train?

It is just not possible to manufacture one in BD because the country is just infested with low breed peasants like you who are not able to emulate and produce because your minds fear to challenge a difficult task. After all, such dirty works will blacken your fairy hands!!

.
@bluesky i think the point @Bilal9 is trying to make here is that we do not have the required expertise to build these simply because there isn't enough local demand for them . And paradoxically, since there is no incentive to manufacture these stuff here, we do not have the required skilled labour force, which takes further incentive away from companies to move or start production here.

So, unless we offer companies really favourable tax rates (and good infrastructure), they don't have any incentive to start producing these here (for export).
