Around 15 people were attacked in Rajasthan.

A Muslim man brutally beaten up by cow vigilantes in Rajasthan's Alwar district has died from his injuries, the police said on Tuesday.

Pehlu Khan, in his 50s, died late on Monday night in a hospital where he was admitted for treatment.

Khan and others were injured when a mob attacked nearly 15 persons hailing from Haryana, while transporting cows in vehicles on the Behror highway in Alwar district on Saturday, the police said.

Other injured persons, whose number could not be known immediately, were recuperating in hospital.

A Muslim man has died after he was attacked by hundreds of Hindu vigilantes while transporting cows in India, police said Wednesday, amid rising tensions over the slaughter of the sacred animal.

Pehlu Khan, 55, died in hospital late Monday, two days after a mob attacked his cattle truck on a highway in Alwar in the western state of Rajasthan.

Cows are considered sacred in Hindu-majority India, and their slaughter is illegal in many states.

In parts of northern and western India, squads of vigilantes roam highways inspecting livestock trucks for any trace of the animal.

Alwar police chief Rahul Prakash said at least six others were injured in the attack, but had now been discharged from the hospital.

Police are still trying to identify the attackers and have filed a murder case, he said, adding that a postmortem would determine the cause of Khan's death.

“We are yet to receive the postmortem report but he had multiple rib fractures,” he told AFP.

Prakash said the victim and his associates were returning to their home state of Haryana when the mob intercepted their vehicle.

At least 10 Muslim men have been killed in similar incidents across the country by Hindu mobs on suspicion of eating beef or smuggling cows in the last two years.

In 2015 a Muslim man was lynched by his neighbours over rumours that he had slaughtered a cow. Police later said the meat was mutton.

Critics say the vigilantes were emboldened by the election in 2014 of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Last year Modi criticised the cow-protection vigilantes and urged a crackdown against groups using religion as a cover for committing crimes.

But last month, he appointed a right-wing Hindu priest to head the country's most populous state Uttar Pradesh, which is also home to much of the country's meat industry.

Shortly after he was sworn in, police began shutting butcher shops, grinding much of the industry to a halt.

India probe after 'cow vigilantes kill Muslim man'

Cow vigilante groups have been actively checking vehicles for illegal transportation of the animal in different states

Police in the the northern Indian state of Rajasthan are investigating the death of a Muslim man at the hands of a suspected cow vigilante group.

Police officials told the BBC that some men had attacked three vehicles that were transporting cows on Saturday.

Five people were taken to hospital after suffering injuries in the attack, and one of them died on Tuesday night.

The cow is considered sacred by Hindus, and killing the animal is illegal in several states, including Rajasthan.
Senior officer Parmal Gurjar told the BBC that the police had registered a murder case against unknown people after the death of a man identified as Pehlu Khan.

"We are checking video footage to identify the attackers. It seems they were part of a a cow vigilante group," he said.

Mr Khan's uncle, Husain Khan, told the BBC that his nephew was not a butcher but a cattle farmer, and he had bought the cows for his dairy business.

Police have also seized the three vehicles, and registered a case against four people for illegally transporting cows.

Many states have actively started enforcing bans on cow slaughter after the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party formed India's federal government in 2014.

The western state of Gujarat last month passed a law making the slaughter of cows punishable with life imprisonment.

In addition to government bans, several vigilante groups who portray themselves as protectors of cows have also been active in several states.

The groups routinely check vehicles and often beat up cattle traders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year criticised the vigilantes, saying such people made him "angry".

However this has not stopped attacks against cattle traders.

Now transporting them is also crime. I am seeing hitlar base India and yes it is coming

We dont feel good either. Perpetrators must be brought to justice. Crime in any form should not be tolerated.

What do you think about this legislation made for Cow? Is it justifiable in secular countries like India and how your country men see this? I mean India has highest number of minorities as compare to other countries and they should come up with sensible legislation. The secular fabric made by your leaders in last two decades will be destroyed.
In short you guys get your own version of ZIA. We still see the aftershocks of his tenure.

Great to see the crocodile tears sprouting out from our neighbors . One Indian dies and look how concerned they are...................kudos
