Muslim convert behind Marvel's Pakistani-American superhero
2 December 2013
Last updated at 00:28 GMT

Kamala Khan is not your typical teenage Pakistani-American girl from New Jersey - Marvel Comics' latest superhero is gifted with special powers that enable her to change shape.

But as well as overcoming super villains, her creators hope the new Ms Marvel will combat stereotypes about what it means to be female and Muslim in the US.

G Willow Wilson, a convert to Islam who is writing the comic, says she wants her two young daughters and their generation to have heroes that inspire them.

The new Ms Marvel will make her debut in February next year.

Kamala is not Marvel's first female Muslim superhero - in 2002 the X-Men-related comic books introduced Sooraya Qadir, a niqab-wearing mutant who could transform herself into a cloud of dust.

Produced by the BBC's Franz Strasser

First Person is a series of video features published every Monday on the BBC News website which tells the stories of unique individuals from all walks of life in their own words.
