MQM says goodbye to PPPP

MQM announces decision to sit in opposition benches

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the second largest party in the ruling coalition, will leave the governing alliance and sit in opposition at the federal level, the party said on Sunday.

The MQM made the announcement days after its two federal cabinet ministers resigned, abandoning crisis talks with the main ruling Pakistan People’s Party that had scrambled to keep them on board.

An administration that took power less than three years ago following elections has now lost its majority in parliament and faces possible collapse if the opposition unites to pass a vote of no-confidence.

“We have decided to sit on opposition benches because the government has not done anything to address the issues we have been protesting about,” MQM stalwart Faisal Sabzwari told AFP.

MQM has long been at odds with unpopular President Asif Ali Zardari’s PPP over political violence in Karachi, tax reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund, corruption and crippling inflation.

Without MQM’s 25 seats, the PPP’s coalition numbers 160 seats in the 342-member national assembly, 12 short of the 172 required for a majority.

“The government has not listened to our demands to control inflation and corruption and it is bent upon burdening them with new tax,” said Sabzwari.

MQM remains, however, in the coalition in the southern province of Sindh, of which Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi and economic hub is the capital and where its support is rooted in the Urdu-speaking majority.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani tried to appear calm on live television, telling journalists: “The government is not going to fall.””I was unanimously elected, all parties voted for me in national assembly. We have contacts with all parties,” Gilani said, indicating that horse-trading to shore up a new coalition was already underway.

MQM’s Farooq Sattar, minister for overseas Pakistanis, and ports and shipping minister Babar Ghauri last week submitted their resignations, but the party had stopped short of joining the opposition.

PPP luminaries had appeared publicly confident of stitching up a deal to keep MQM on board, but analysts said late Sunday that the party had decided it no longer wanted to be implicated in an increasingly unpopular government.

All eyes will now turn to Pakistan’s main opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) led by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, that would need to support any possible parliamentary vote of no-confidence.

“It is their moral duty now to prove their majority in the national assembly,” PML-N spokesman Ahsan Iqbal said of the government.

“The prime minister should take fresh vote of confidence from the parliament,” he said.

Political analyst Hasan Askari said: “The government runs into serious problems with the exit of MQM… The basic issue for the government now is survival.”

Yet he doubted any immediate prospect of a vote of no-confidence saying that Sharif appeared unwilling to bring down the government immediately and face responsibility for the country’s myriad crises.

Pakistan is grappling with a depressed economy, the after-effects of devastating floods that affected 21 million people last summer, and Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked sanctuaries in its northwest on the Afghan border.

“That (a vote of no-confidence) is not going to happen for the time being. Nawaz Sharif is not in favour and the opposition is divided,” said Askari.

Troubled relations between Sharif’s party and the MQM gives the government breathing space of at least three to four weeks, analysts estimate, to stitch together a new majority.

“The government will try to win over small groups so you’ll see lots of politicking,” said Askari.

One of those parties set to be wooed could be Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUIF), the country’s most prominent religious party that took seven lawmakers out of government on December 14 after Gilani sacked one of its ministers.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has expressed the confidence that the government would not be derailed despite MQM’s announcement to sit on opposition benches, Geo News reported.

Talking to mediamen here on Sunday, Gilani asserted that government would continue to function with or without any coalition partner.

He was optimistic that PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif is in favor of democratic process and would not let it derail.

To a question on the recent of increase in the prices of petroleum products, Gilani said that government could not afford to grant any more subsidies on petroleum products.

ahhh yes the games continue......who needs tv entertainment when you have all these children

MQM showed it's true face this time.
they showed their worth = 2 paisa only.

1. One they get maligned ,accused and bashed by Interior minister

2. They decide to give a DVD of the same to PM and demand "clarification" and give 10 days for it.
Q. Why ?? PM can't watch Geo news ?
Q. Clarification of what ? can't they understand simple plain Urdu ?

3. After getting literally raped by Zulfi , they decide to go sit in a corner but still not leave the house of the rapist !

Frankly, the above sounded more like MQM didn't want to loose the government at any cost, and tried it's best to keep in till the last moment.

HYPOCRITES

Now MQM has shown your worth = 2 paisa only.

so much drama from MQM still withdrawing from federal ministeries(only due to public pressure that MQM never resigns)

however if MQM really wants to object it should resign from all ministers and sit in opposition! after all PPP was the party that did the operation against "the masum shaheed of mqm in 1992"

so what is this nonsense of MQM to leave federal ministries but retain sindh government and sit on treasury benches hahaha they are like MULANA FAZLUR-REHMAN

MQM is not leaving government period! this is just drama after mulana-fazlur-rehman did the same! its a black mail that is being done to PPP.

bcz altaf hussain is a big drama (drama queen) and all members are junior artists

Certainly a drama like 11 Apr 2008 when Altaf hussain resigned. They might have quit the federal cabinet but surely not gonna quit the coalition. Also i just came across this news on geo tv few moments ago about Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Tuesday accepting the debate challenge put up by Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain

so let me see 2 MINISTERS in the federal government is all that MQM has!!! and such big claims of "leaving the government" please all a drama and publicity stunt!!! if they are serious they should resign from provincial government!

as for GILLANI i feel his head has to roll inorder to "make way" for mulana and MQM to return!!

Now GTFO pathetic liars !:blah:
You people are fu**ed by MQM!

End of PPP.

We'll see elections soon maybe.......hahahaha.

I am feeling sorry for PPP but they deserve this as they ruined the country built up by Musharraf. Wishing to see Musharraf or Imran Khan or MQM ruling Pakistan soon.:smitten::pakistan::victory::yahoo:

bhai this is drama MQM will not resign from sindh government!

besides when a ship sinks first the rats run! and this is what is happening now! MQM was under pressure from all sides because they have never quit so they doing this now will do more drama!

a BRITISH citizen will call saying he and his party sacrificed for pakistan :S

when we kept saying quit coalition with these people who apparently did "operation against you in 1992" they said no we will stick to the coalition for stability today what happened?

wow....just wow......if MQM quits than DRAMA if MQM does'nt quits than DRAMA, some of guys have really sick mentality. BTW think whatever you wanna think but MQM quit because PPP had always show Badma**i in Karachi when they got powers, they killed MQM & ANP ppls & make both parties fight each other, MQM had demanded PPP several times to take strict notice of target killings, solve economy & terrorism problem of country & bring an end to corruption, but PPP govt failed because their motto is to loot Pakistan as much as you can during power than run Dubai,London or Switzerland for 5 10 years than again come back.

BTW situation is now very spicy at the moment, let's see what happens next.

The truth is MQM will sit with those who are well wishers of Pakistan.Musharraf was a well wisher, just open eyes & watch his era, when Rupee value increased from 59 to 57 & now decreased to huge 85, economy was boosting at 8% per year, heavy development all over Pakistan, & a new mega city was being built. Defence industry was becoming self reliant.

Better not come back rather than coming to loot the money of poor Pakistan, taking aid in the name of Pakistan & deposit in your bank accounts, taking heavy loans in the name of Pakistan & depositing in your bank accounts.

Army did'nt launch oparation on its own, it was Nawaz who ordered Army to launch operation.

Musharraf kept the economy and rupee rate lower artificially no wonder the most work was done in his reign but the fact is he played a game by burdfenimng the economy by giving petrol cheaper and subsidizing it and when he left PML N financial minister just told the investors Pak has nothing left n all that stuff in that conference
And that was the plan from him people will curse the current govt. n ask for him to comeback :) but even i do want him back but the fac tis he cant bring those golden days back
