What's new

Moscow wants Dhaka by its side at UN, WTO

i dont think the US is interested in having a naval base in Chittagong.
Usa want to control this region. Now there is no Soviet. Russia is just the external offensive power of China.

So now not the Arabian sea , but the bay of bengal is the key area for united states to encircle China. The power center shifted to the bay of Bengal when China became the top rival of usa. So indeed usa would want a military base in this region in near future!

Please think again.

.
imo a combination of carrot and stick.

mostly carrots, i hope

Yeah man.

Hopefully carrots.

Also, Bangladesh does have an opportunity to take advantage of this situation.

i.e. Why not use increased access to US training to absolutely rejuvenate the BAF into a NATO standard force?

Same for the other services.

.
You are not seeing the big picture.

Are you not seeing what is happening in Pakistan?

If the US wants something, it will get it.

By hook or by crook.

Especially in the case of weaker countries like Bangladesh.

So I ask you?

If the US REALLY wants something from Bangladesh.

What really can Bangladesh do?
@UKBengali already wrote a good reply (#24). I just want to add and that is , we aren't democracy like Pakistan.

so it won't be easy for usa to collapse out govt as they did in Pakistan.

You see why I hate democracy and like dictatorship?

@Avicenna

.
Then what if China stops giving us money? Can usa give us the money? Do they have such huge amount of trade surplus?

Besides, if dollar hegemony really comes to an end , will usa still can be beneficial from this monetary system?

So what what usa can offer Bangladesh in return if they forcefully try to get Bangladesh in their camp? Will China sit hand on hand to see it since China want a deep influence on the bay of Bengal.

So will China take the risk? What if Bangladesh goes in usa camp? Usa would want to establish a base , in order to create trouble for China.

Would China allow it?
BD is not indispensable for China. They can realise all their strategic goals in the Indian Ocean without Bangla.
Bangladesh will have to find other sources of funding.

Again.

It doesn't matter WHAT Bangladesh is.

If the US needs something, it will identify weak points and act to secure its interests.

Well if that's the case , I have no problem.

If China remain silent and keep giving money even after Bangladesh directly join usa side , I'm fine with that.

But don't know why China always insist that Bangladesh shouldn't join in QUAD!

Also if we want money from alter source , first we have to find it.

Can you please name some countries?

@Destranator.

If BD is forced into the US camp, it should demand more access to the US market and investment by US companies especially in manufacturing. This will be an win win for Bangladesh and US corporations (not the American people - they will lose more manufacturing jobs).

This is a possibly controversial take, but:

Myanmar is the great prize when it comes to the Indo-Pacific.

Both for China or the West.

you see even the amreeki ally india is not hosting a US base. they do not fully trust the US.

geographically it makes more sense to have a base in Indonesia or India

BD is not indispensable for China.
Chinese interest in BD is mostly economic in nature. They want to make money and have a good trading partner for the future and so do we. win win for both.

BD needs to make drastic improvements to its investment climate to attract Chinese sunset industries. Most of which are making their way to Vietnam (not Pakistan or Bangladesh which are on good terms with PRC ) despite the bad relations between the two. The PRC cannot force its businessmen to invest capital where it is at risk. PRC cannot be blamed for this , its BD fault.

its in our interest to keep it destabilised as it is.

I think people are missing the point that if BD was forced into US Camp then this would threaten Chinese interests in Myanmar.

China will be forced to act if not now then in some years down the line as it's power vis-a-vis the USA/West grows. The Chinese will never entertain the US having a military base in BD or allow the US to be able to have a military logistics supply next door to Myanmar.

Repeating myself, BD is not as easy to control like Pakistan is and yes while BD was under the radar for USA till now the fact that it is a unitary state, has no opposition and is relatively economically sound makes it a harder to control than Pakistan. All powers, including the US, do a cost benefit calculation and they could decide that it is not worth the cost for whatever they may be able to gain from BD.

People are falling into the trap that US is all powerful when it is in the twilight of it's power while Chinese power is rising. At the end of the day US can ask but will have to settle for a neutral BD which is what BD intends to do all along.

Why do you think the Chinese explicitly warned Bangladesh about "joining the QUAD"?

Note in the third article the term "unusual" warning.

This ain't about India.

Also, there is a LONG way before we can entertain China being a peer to the US.

And even then, Uncle Sam won't go quietly.

Interestingly, look at the Chinese reaction to Ukraine/Russia.

Or for that matter the reported US interference in Pakistan.

They are playing the long game.

Now US presence in the North Bay of Bengal threatening Chinese interests in Myanmar MAY make China act.

I doubt the US wants a base in Bangladesh.

But really I'm not sure what they want.

Which is what I was asking several days ago.

But it IS clear they want something.

US does not seek nor need a base in BD. Talk of a US base has always been a red herring created in BD itself.

USA has full coverage of the shipping lanes via diago garcia and indians via the andamans.

The party most aggreived by US presence in BD would be the indians and not the chinese.

China overplayed its hand by vocalising on the quad issue. Western power is diminishing but they still remain the most powerful block.

At the end of the day perfect alignment is missing vis a vis BDs interest and that of the west and China. So most logical position would be for BD to align on point by point basis with each party and move position as often as necessary to serve BDs longterm interest and/or minimise stategic damage.

Yes they are still the most powerful block, but militarily.

Economically China is way ahead. But since we count economy with BAL fed usd number per capita , so we won't understand how powerful China is economically. And nowadays economy is the greatest weapon.

And now usa already became a lot weaker in economy compared to China and now after dollar under threat ( because of Ukraine Russia war ) usa is losing ground more seriously!

Americas greatest weapon is not her military , but it was dollar dominance.

This article says the dollar benefits for usa.

Well if we still arrogantly push that dollar can't be harmed it will remain a king forever, then we have to wait sometimes.
