Moscow-Kazan Super Train

Coming out on Xinhuanet on the initiation of this project, some details are:

Distance: 700 km with stops in between.
Speed: top speed 400 km/h
Current time: 14hrs -- Reduced to 3.5 hrs.
Expected to complete before the 2018 World Cup in Ufa, Russia.

From Moscow to Kazan, it connects with the cluster city of Nizhniy-Novgorod-Oblast about 1.6 million population and Kazan area also 1.6 million. Speeding up their lives speeds by 4 times will increase their process efficiency considerably and rapidly.

From Kazan the next major area to reach will be Yekaterinberg, the center of the Ural cluster, about 1.4 million.

Then the line will cut to Kazakhstan through Astana, and from Astana to Urumqi in Xinjiang and then to the Super Train networks of China.

China's Super Train network is now expanding to become 4 north-south lines plus 4 east-west lines.

Great project don't forget to tag me when you post the pics

Top speed 400 km per hour, good to see this project, Russia will be ahead of China to test such high speed train.

Yeah with Chinese tech. So China won't be behind. Anyway, if they want to be finished in time for the 2018 world cup, shovels will need to hit the dirt soon. And I believe lots of Chinese construction workers as well, as the Russians just aren't that quick. Nice to see. And it will be 350 km/h tops, not 400 (don't think it's viable so soon). Anyway, congrats to Russia, and congrats to another building block of the Silk Road of prosperity.

Yes, Chinese are smart, Chinese are not only exporting the tech, but a passageway to constantly transporting Chinese products and capital from where it is saturated to where it is needed, so the high speed train is a prerequisite condition. Personally I hope it could reach 400 km, but it's unclear as you say, the reason I think is the cold weather in Russia needs different materials from those in China.

How about gauges by the way? Doesn't China use narrower gauges? And how is that solved in the Silk Road initiative? I think many ex-Soviet Central Asian countries use Russian gauge?

Yes the gauge standard is different of course, Chinese gauge is about 1.435 meters wide, it's narrower, before the train travels out of China at the boarder, the factory has to replace the narrower China train wheel with wider wheel.

Oh good, just another set of wheels. So not an entirely new undercarriage, though I bet there is enough engineering involved. Perhaps China can use it's 'Chinese standard gauge' like it's using in Africa when building infrastructure in Central Asia. Seen as how China is the big spender and lender, it's only right that a standardised gauge would be the Chinese gauge. I can hear them now: "China is trying to take over the world!!!"

Still the good old 1520mm Soviet gauge I am afraid..and apparently the Russians insisted on it. I dont understand why they want to keep it considering 1435mm is widely accepted gauge for HSR by the whole world,Maybe they think linking with the other former USSR nations is more important than linking with Europe and China :frown:

Could be indeed. So sad. Anyway, a lot better than no rail at all. I wish to see a nice freight line from Eastern and Southern China to Germany, capable of double stacked containers in about 20 years. With a single gauge. How great would that be. Expensive though. Needs lots of modifications to bridges etc.

China work fast--awesome. In canada we are still talking about extending a few subway lines since 1986.

Very much so. Any connectivity boost of Eurasia could be seen as a a shovel of dirt digging from the USA's shiny new grave, and yes it is expensive..I suppose we could sell some US Treasury bond to fund it..
