What's new

More homeowners are turning to solar power

If you go to market, then its all China, and every shop, 10s of Qualities.
So net, I bought Poly type plates. 16 of them. 4 acid batteries. But with acid batteries, I bought a self cleaning regulator, again Chinese brand. Batteries are working since past 1.5 years, with almost same backup time, with this regulator. This was new to me as this type of regulators increase battery life 3 to 4 times. Huge saving. Costed me around 5 lakh PKR overall. Motor, AC, Fridge, Fan, everything on this setup. Only in late night, this switches automatically to Wapda (75% drain threshold set in regulator).

Well my contractor is proposing supercapacitor

. . .
I don't know technicalities but as per him, it's better than normal dry battery, charges quickly and have 1 million cycles life.
The cost the main factor between acid battery and supercapacitor. If you use your solar panel daily then performance difference is not so much. Otherwise supercapacitor idle discharge is far more than Acid battery. In nutshell, only money is the main deciding factor here.

With solar panels, I don't think idle time will be issue. I heard net metering will be available in area. But yeah it's costly, 1 supercapacitor will cost around 100k

Pretty wild. The only thing I think that is creating a slow introduction into the market is the cost. From the numbers I'm hearing out there and within the busy, they're pretty high for a complete solar roof. In time, though, they'll end up leveling off and we'll be seeing a lot more of them.

Drove right by a huge TESLA building the other day. I forget what town we were in but I'm sure I'll see it again. Not sure if it's the New England HQ or what it is? But it was a large building. I think eventually we'll see more of these roofing systems as requirements on some of our projects. Funny I was just telling on of the guys the other day that a roof like that, 10 years ago wouldn't have been an issue to get up on it and take care of whatever. Now? It's like "uuuh, nope!" lol.

BTW, surprised that house in that video didn't have a cricket on the back of that chimney. That's a lot of water stoppage brick wall just to depend on lead flashing. 99% of the time, a chimney like that would have a cricket on it.

I wonder if they can adapt solar roofs to fit in Mediterranean style homes, which are really common in central Texas and the US southwest in general. Having panels would degrade the aesthetics of these houses IMO.

Wow your Home looks awesome. No wonder Chinese Americans are rich.

It's strong enough to walk on...sliding down and then off it is the bigger issue. You start to slide...well it's game over.

I was going to say that would be a really nice house to live in if it didn't have a chimney. Chimneys are just a weak spot for roof water leaks. Direct vent out the side for my fireplace.
That is not my home LOL ... I'm far from rich.

Looks like they may be adding different styles again soon

Unless you need to reroof your house, tesla solar roof does not make sense. Powerwall makes even less sense as it does not even pay for itself.
