What's new

More homeowners are turning to solar power

Unless you need to reroof your house, tesla solar roof does not make sense. Powerwall makes even less sense as it does not even pay for itself.

It depends upon your electricity costs vs roof costs. If your electricity bill is only a small fraction compared to a new roof then of course it doesn't make sense. If you need a new roof and 2+ electric cars are in your family's future then it may be reasonable.

Certainly LED bulbs have cut home power usage but EVs will make up for it.

Very unlikely for a family to buy 2+ electric cars. Normally people with multiple cars buy one electric and one ICE. The major downside to solar roof is you have to reroof the entire house with it and that is expensive. It's pretty unlikely you will need that much. If you get panels instead you can tailor to your energy usage.

Yes, and 6 years ago normal people bought 2 ICE cars...can we think a little in the long term instead of just the present? A roof should last 25+ years. A solar roof over 50. That "normal" can likely change in that timeframe.

It is quite possible that someday a solar roof will be made a requirement (or a heavily desired feature) in new home construction. Right now since they are a new product they are pricey.

I looked into this last year as I was planning to install some panels. I need to drop around $150k for solar roof versus panels at just $20k. The extra energy from your panels that sell back to the grid don't make you much money because the rates are really low. It's only worth to generate enough to cover your energy use. Anyways what I'm trying to say is unless the price can come down drastically, solar roof will just stay as a stupid status symbol.

. . .
I have over 6k square feet of roof to cover. Also contractor costs are much higher where I live compared to what's listed in the video.

Well your specific case doesn't automatically condemn the Tesla solar roof to "a stupid status symbol". Unfortunately for you it sucks..for others it is fine.

There are people putting them on crappy inner-city houses.
