What's new

More homeowners are turning to solar power

Let's take California as you mentioned. Typical electric bills in California are $135 per month.

Now you know why Solar panels are not widespread. The national average is only $111.

The average monthly residential electricity bill in California is $88.

It's $94 in my state with 627 kWh/month.

No lol, typical solar installation pays for itself. Tesla solar roof is just shit.

$20k upfront, $135 per month payback, 12 years to recover capital, 13 years of guaranteed profit for a 25 year warranty.

Nice try. Tesla solar roof is horrible and aesthetic only.

You are still being incredibly thick about this.
Average cost of a new roof is $14,000
Average cost of a solar panel roof is $20,470
$10500 for the PowerWall

Total: $44,970

Why are you intentionally skipping the cost of replacing your roof when you know the main selling point of a Tesla solar shingle roof is to have it done when you need a roof replacement.

Because roofing lasts 25+ years and any given homeowner is unlikely to need to replace it given average tenancy times in the US.

Well the people who want the nice roofs I guess would be the long term'ers.

"As of 2018, the median duration of homeownership in the U.S. is 13.3 years"

Certainly if I was only going to live in a house for 13.8 years why would I go solar at all.
I'm currently at 15 years with no reason to move.

from the perspective of a real estate investor, solar not only pays back within 12 years but also increases appraisal value of the property by $4000 per kw. It is a no brainer for me to go solar on my residential property where it provide me with some free money until I sell it and it increases appraisal value, essentially cashing in my investment + the dividends paid in power.

Hey why get a 25 year roof when you can cheap out for a crappy 15 and make even more money. I'm sure you can get a deal at some place like Lumber Liquidators.

15 year roofs could appraise lower but if the appraiser is not a subject matter expert and can't distinguish it wouldn't matter. also doesn't matter for rent. thanks for the tip.

I have 6.6K solar panels in my home. My summer bill is under $10 (instead of $110) and winter bill hits $70 (instead of $150). Within a year, I recovered my out of pocket cost. Its no brainner, everyone must have it.

You're welcome. I'm glad we have finally straightened out the situation you are in so people can see this is not an option for people like you. So you can now just leave this thread since as it is simply not applicable to your lifestyle.

Now back to this thread for those of us who aren't like you (yes, shockingly there are people on this planet with a different situation than you) and actually keep their homes in their family for over 50 years and don't want low quality stuff.

Well the ultimate goal of this shingle technology is to get the price down with volume to the point where every new home being built will have it come standard and ubiquitous (just like indoor plumbing). This way not only will you save on your electric bill but will help with the cost of an electric car.

Currently solar panels are not common in new home builds because they are considered an eyesore by many and this decreases a builder's target market.
