Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived inDublin on Wednesday for his maiden day-long visit to Ireland enroute to the US. He is scheduled for a "tete-a-tete" with Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Enda Kenny at the Government Buildings in Dublin City Centre followed by a working luncheon hosted by Kenny in honour of Modi, the first Indian Premier to visit the country in almost 60 years.

"We hope to further develop strong people-to-people and economic ties withIreland in the years to come," Modi had said in a Facebook post in reference to the visit.

Following the government-level interactions, the Prime Minister will interact with the Indian community in Ireland at a special event being hosted at HOTEL DOUBLE TREEHilton in Dublin. Ireland is home to around 26,000 persons of Indian origin, of which around 17,000 are Indian citizens. The bulk of the community is in the healthcare sector, working as doctors and nurses, with information technology and engineering among some of the other sectors.

The country is also fast emerging as a significant destination for Indian students seeking higher education, particularly in post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral courses in these particular fields.

"This is a very historic visit and there are lots of expectations from Mr Modi. We are confident the PM is the right person to trust to increase foreign INVESTMENTS for India," said Lalubhai Parekh, president of the Overseas Friends of BJP (OFBJP).

From Dublin, Modi sets off for New York this evening to address a UN Sustainable Development Summit and participate in a summit on peacekeeping being hosted by US President Barack Obama. He then travels on to the West Coast of the US, where he will address the Indian community in the Silicon Valley and hold meetings with top tech CEOs as part of this two-nation, three-city tour which concludes on September 29.

The last Indian prime minister to visit Ireland was Jawaharlal Nehru in 1956.

There was considerable optimism in the Irish media over Modi's visit, going by the coverage in all the leading dailies.

"India presents an opportunity to boost our exports to the faster growing parts of the world - but requires the same level of focus and dedication which Ireland has invested in otherTRADING partners," said the 'Irish Independent' in a comment piece titled 'There are 1.27 billion reasons why Indian visit is crucial to Ireland'.

"The visit is one of major importance and offers an extensive opportunity for Ireland to reposition itself with one of the largest and fastest growing economies globally," echoed the 'Irish Examiner'.

"Irish officials see Modi's visit - only his third to Europe, after visits last year to France and Germany - as a rare opportunity to raise Ireland's profile in the world's most populous democracy, where Ireland is relatively unknown," added the 'Irish Times'.

Fabulous speech . Really funny jokes in between . HAR HAR MODI GHAR GHAR MODI echoed in ireland !!! Very passionate crowd . Really Modi is a great leader of independent India so far!!!

Some of it : Before when BRICS was at planning stage and even recently all experts use to mock about India . By calling "I" in the brics looks shaky and distressing.Even many pted Indonesia in place of I . But today we changed the tide . Today in just 1.5 years India is the only strongest nation in BRICS .

In Ireland small small kids are singing and chanting in Sanskrit . Its very pleasent to see it as In India there will be lots of hue and cry from seculars :P

It is very tight schedule so i have to wind up my speech soon . But i assure you i will return once again very soon .

In Power Push for India at UN, PM Narendra Modi to Host Angela Merkel, Shinzo Abe
NEW YORK: In the first summit of its kind in more than ten years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a power-packed special summit on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in US to push for a permanent seat for India on the global body's Security Council.

The PM left this morning for Ireland from where he will head to US for a six-day trip that ends on September 29.

On Saturday morning, just before he leaves for the West Coast, PM Modi will host German Chancellor Angela Merkel, often described as the most powerful woman on the planet, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York at a summit of what is known as the G-4 group. All four countries back each other's bid for permanent seats at the UN Security Council.

The high-octane summit hosted by India will come against the backdrop of a breakthrough agreement at the United Nations last week on a text that will form the basis for all future negotiations on UN reforms and the expansion of the Security Council, in particular.

Over the years, the meetings of the G-4 have normally been attended by the foreign ministers of the four countries. The decision to elevate it to the heads of state this time was taken by PM Modi in consultation with Japanese PM Abe.

Mr Abe is specially flying into New York for the summit that is scheduled to begin at 8 am (local time) on Saturday, September 26.

Indian diplomats say that the protests by China and Pakistan have been successfully circumvented in the drafting of the text. Sources say it is the American response that has been disappointing - the US did not even attend a special meeting to mark 70 years of the United Nations that was held in San Francisco.

Speaking to NDTV, Asoke Mukerji, India's permanent representative at the UN said, "All India, the world's oldest democracy is pushing for is greater democratization of the United Nations.

Irish PM bats for India getting permanent UNSC seat, expansion of trade ties

ANI | Dublin Sep 23, 2015 08:44 PM IST

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny on Wednesday said that the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the United Nations should recognise the geopolitical realities of massive countries like India, and make them permanent members, and added that the opportunities for the smaller countries should also not diminish at the UNSC.

Array

"We also discussed that question of the reform of the United Nations, the Security Council. We recognise that changes that take place, on one hand should not diminish the opportunity of small countries in the Security Council and on the other hand should recognise the geopolitical realities of massive countries like India," Kenny said at a joint media interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Array

Kenny said that several issues of mutual interest to the two countries were discussed between him and Prime Minister Modi, including ways to take bilateral trade ties forward.

Array

"The Prime Minister is very well versed on the challenges Ireland has faced; on the difficult choices that our government had to make. Now, that the economy is growing, we see opportunities for trade bilaterally in education, tourism, and the changes we made in the visa structure," he said.

Array

"We see real opportunities for Irish skills, Irish IT, Irish innovation work with India in terms of many of the Prime Ministers, real passions, the cleaning of the Ganges, hygiene water where innovative Irish companies have made breakthroughs," he added.

Array

He also said that the issue of non-recognition of medical internships was also discussed, and added that the matter would be taken up by Irish Health Minister Leo Varadkar when he visits India.

Array

"Minister Sullivan is to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), and to do so will travel to India at an appropriate time. I have formally invited the Indian President to visit Ireland, and Prime Minister is happy to convey that," he said.

Array

"We look forward to increase in number both of Indian students who come here and increasing number of Indian tourists," he added.

Prime Minister Modi arrived here today on the first leg of his two-nation trip to Ireland and United States.

This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ireland in 60 years.

We should give river cleaning projects to Irish company in which they have made break through. This will not only strengthen our relationship but hugely help people of India to have access to clean drinking water. Hope we do it in larger scale. When loans are already ready with Japanese friends and many others like Germans who really want to pour in money into India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday sought Ireland’s support for India’s membership of UN Security Council and international export control regimes including NSG during wide ranging talks with his Irish counterpart which also covered global challenges like terror and radicalisation. During his nearly five-hour stopover en-route to the US, Modi, who is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Ireland in 59 years, held talks with his Irish counterpart Enda Kenny after which he hoped that Ireland’s visa policy will be sensitive to the requirements of India’s IT firms. - See more at:
