Narendra Modi's Swearing-In: Hamid Karzai, Sheikh Hasina, Mahinda Rajapaksa to Attend | NDTV.com
Hasina already had a scheduled visit to Japan at that time.
So she will probably be sending their Speaker along with her son.

FYI,, she will be making a more important visit - to China. Ayee samajh?
Not China you fool.
She's going to Japan.

@Prometheus

He hasn't invited only Nawaz Sharif. This is not an exclusive invitation to him. He has invited 7 other SAARC members. If Nawaz comes well and good , otherwise even better. There is no special treatment of Pakistan here. That is the message he is sending. He couldn't have invited all countries PMs and not invited Sharif, that would have made him and India look very bad and ugly before the world. It is actually a great step that he has taken and I am beginning to get it now.

Who the **** cares for others? World will care if Nawaz go to India, not officials of lulo nations.

lol very bad idea at this moment, most of Sri Lankans will dislike this idea.
Why many indians visit sl
Only thing between in and sl is tamilnadu now not a problem bjp dont have opposition

Tamils from Tamilnadu is the issue. we already arresting TN Tamils for over staying, engage in other illegal activities. majority percentage of Indians who in our jails are TN Tamils.

It is a dif

let me explain this.

Dr.Singh the outgoing Indian Premier was leading a left centered government and he would "invite" Pakistani premier any ways. And he continued to invite Pakistan Premier amidst reports of Pakistans intrusions/killing of indian soldiers and also pakistans overtures on peace process.

Mr.Modi is a right winger. He is known to have hawkish view point on Pakistan. He is trying to understand the Left wingers and Center wingers and call the premier despite his credentials. I think it is clearly laudable and a sign of a mature statesman who can hold his own views but still act on a collective goodness despite that being different from his own views.

Hope this helps you to appreciate the gesture.

another weak PM .................who scored self goal even before taking over office ................and even more humiliation for India when Pak PM rejects invitation ..............Modi should understand he is now representing India ...........his insult is India's Insult .....................dont do anything silly that even have a remote chance for others to insult us

Tamils from Tamilnadu is the issue. we already arresting TN Tamils for over staying, engage in other illegal activities. majority percentage of Indians who in our jails are TN Tamils.

good ................any illegal activity should be kept under check ...................and now with no interference of Tamil Parties in Indian govt. , such activities can controlled by mutual cooperation

Mr Modi and his deeds. Thats why i say dont expect much.
This is just a courtesy invitation for the ceremony, what is there to expect? Kandhe pe bithaya nahee abhee aur tum kaan me mutne kee baat karte ho.

Tamils from Tamilnadu is the issue. we already arresting TN Tamils for over staying, engage in other illegal activities. majority percentage of Indians who in our jails are TN Tamils.
Muslims from Ceylon is our issue...last month ,a ceylonese muslim isi agent was arrested by Tamilnad police for spying...and also in Kerala one was arrested for drug trafficking....

New Delhi: Narendra Modi has invited the leaders of Pakistan, Bangladesh and other South Asian neighbours to his oath ceremony as prime minister next Monday, in a bold step to embark on a policy of regional engagement. (Modi to Be Sworn In As India's 15th PM on May 26)

Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai has reportedly confirmed he will attend as has Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Maldives President Abdulla Yameen could attend too, say sources. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has conveyed that she will not be able to attend the oath-taking as she is travelling to Japan.

Pakistan has welcomed Mr Modi's gesture, calling it a bold move. Reply from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's office is awaited. After his own election last year, Mr Sharif's administration had also suggested that the Indian PM be invited to attend his inauguration ceremony, but Dr Manmohan Singh had declined. (Will be happy to invite Manmohan Singh to swearing-in: Nawaz Sharif)

The invitations were sent by India's ministry of external affairs.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, tipped to be an important minister in the Modi cabinet said, "This is to signal to our neighbours that the new government wants direct and peaceful relations.

The move by Mr Modi signals a big shift in his party, the BJP's position on Pakistan. While campaigning for the general election, Mr Modi attacked the Congress-led UPA government for what he called a "stagnated" and "weak" foreign policy. "The heads of our soldiers are cut but then their Prime Minister is fed chicken biryani," he said in a speech, referring to the beheading of an Indian jawan at the border last year.

Political leaders in Kashmir have welcomed the move. Mehbooba Mufti of the People's Democratic Party said, "It's good omen to invite the Pakistani PM on Modi's swearing-in ceremony."

"Excellent move by @narendramodi to invite SAARC leaders, especially Pak PM for his swearing in. Hope this is beginning of sustained talks (sic)," Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah tweeted.

Minutes later he again posted, "At the same time I can't help wonder what BJP would have said if a PM designate Rahul Gandhi had done the same thing."

But the BJP's southern ally MDMK's Vaiko has opposed the participation of the Sri Lanka President. The MDMK and many other Tamil political parties allege that human rights violations against Tamils and civilian casualties in Lanka peaked during the last leg of the war against LTTE with Mr Rajapaksa in charge.

Well get ready for the circus TN.. The clowns are putting up the make up.... How would the Modi govt react to this.. Await

Vaiko opposes inviting MR to Modi's swearing in

BJP's ally MDMK on Wednesday opposed the participation of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the May 26 swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as Prime Minister, saying his presence would hurt the feelings of the Tamil people.

Party founder Vaiko claimed Congress was shown the door by the people of Tamil Nadu for allegedly helping Colombo in its pursuit against LTTE, "in which thousands of Tamil civilians were allegedly killed."

With "unexplainable grief" Vaiko asked Modi and BJP national president Rajnath Singh not to allow Rajapaksa to attend the swearing-in ceremony which, he said, would hurt the Tamils the world over.

"In such a situation it has come as a major jolt that invitation has been reportedly sent to Rajapaksa," Vaiko said in a statement.

The Centre's reasoning that he was part of the SAARC nations' leaders who have been invited for the swearing-in was not acceptable and his participation in the ceremony would result in "grief and regret" for Tamil people, he added.

Vaiko recalled that Sri Lanka was not invited when BJP's A. B. Vajpayee was sworn-in in 1998-99 and the subsequent ceremonies to mark assuming of offices by the UPA in 2004 and 2009, he said. (IBN live)

Bridge to srilanka and no more passport to sl and in

There is a Visa on arrival and ETA system in place for tourists to SL ..Including Indians, It's a very convenient and efficient system.. Any other measure beyond that is unnecessary atm with all due respect

Modi will need Jayalalitha for passing laws in Rajya Sabha. Considering that Modi wants to pass a lot of laws and reforms, he will need support of other parties in RS. BJP has very low numbers in RS.

I agree TN parties influence in the Parliament is now vastly dimished from what it was under UPA, but its not like he can completely jettison them either.

TN is as much India as much as Punjab, Maharashtra, Delhi and Sikkim are, mate.

They are our countrymen and their concerns are our concerns collectively. When fishermen are killed and kidnapped, they are our people as much as they belong to TN. We in the mountains feel the pain of these fishermen as much and I am sure so would you.

There is a serious problem but that will not be solved by war. Technically a conflict won't even last 3 days in the worst case scenario. But what will we gain from it?

UPA decimated our influence, goodwill and credibility not just with estranged neighbours like Lanka but also with friendly ones like Maldives. Their weakness, attitude and total neglect caused so much damage that it is worth gold if we could count on value terms.

UPA was tasked to DEFINE and implement a maritime border and create appropriate means to warn our fishermen down south to limit their fishing in Indian waters. Same was supposed to be with the Lankans on their side.

But instead, these morons gave our one island to SL which emboldened their leadership to push a little bit around.

Relations are respected when they are strong, independent and can draw a Red line.

Defining the maritime border and educating fishermen about them is a government's responsibility. since there is no fence possible, the government has to task out other means to demarkate the area and scrap off the inter-country fishing agreements that actually allow rogue local military authorities to kill our folks.

If the attacks happen AFTER such measures have been taken, then the government has all the rights to retaliate with severity.

Great news to here. Seems like Modi government is ready to scrap the Congress foreign policy.

Congress never had a foreign or domestic policy.

They came only to weaken Rupee, destroy our economy, weaken our national defences and communalize India.

Well get ready for the circus TN.. The clowns are putting up the make up.... How would the Modi govt react to this..

There will be explanation and discussions done before the ceremony.

Modi has clarified that the focus will be on development and not on politics. Which means that this is like starting with a clean slate. Jaylalitha the CM of TN is very close to Modi and BJP as a whole. Despite not being allies, they are still always made aware of why a decision is taken.

MDMK thinks that by playing this politics card, it will spoil the initiative.

They have a right to know why the step is being taken and they will be explained in due course and for what reason. I don't know what it is but I trust it is in good nature and can start a new chapter leaving aside everything.

This invitation is NOT an olive branch which many amateurs think; it is a double edged sword which says that 'we are ready to go the extra mile for friendship, but if we are backstabbed, there are other options on the table'.

Not for anyone specific with due respect to Sri Lankan government, but generally as a whole.

No thanks. It is pushing a little too far. There is too much burden involved in this and personally I think we should focus on reducing violence as a metaphorical bridge, without cowering down unlike what UPA did: didn't initiate any friendly process nor militarily retaliated to killings of our fishermen.
