What's new

Miss New York is first Indian-American to win Miss America

I think she is pretty and has a great smile. But her reaction after winning was pretty ugly. I felt like they should take back her title.

Although Ms.Kansas was probably the most deserving of the title, Nina is damn bloody smart and a fellow Wolverine....gotta support my alumni...Go Blue! And congrats to Ms.New York!

She's not that bad in looks - she's a future surgeon and her dad's a gynaec - a lot of grey matter up there.

The U.S. allows anyone to ascend to any heights. Nothing can stop them, not their ethnicity, their family background or religion. The American Dream provides an even platform for everyone. You just have to give it your best shot. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Nina Davul, an Indian-American, won the Miss America Pageant. We should not focus on the few bigots who have made derogatory remarks about the new beauty queen. Instead, we should appreciate the diversity in this great country.

Interesting tweet but this is somewhat true.

"Nina would have been dismissed as a dark plain girl in India. In America, she gets to be ms America. Is still a more diverse society than us"

Some Indians still suffer from a colonial hangover..As India becomes more educated, this will subside..Benchmarks for beauty will change as well.

Sorry Brother...That was my bad..Ive corrected this since..

'fair' ness has been praised in book before british came... Indians like fair skin...

you have to understand that "Fair skin" was considered a sign of nobility not just among Indians, but even european cultures.

The term "blue Blood" comes from the extremely pale skin that the european nobility would sport leading to the veins being exposed through the skin giving the appearance of one having "blue" blood.
The point is that the nobility was not exposed to the sun while the gentry would be darker and toiled in the sun...which is where we get this generalization from..

However the colonization just made the whole phenomenon more ingrained in the Indian psyche....

PS: Its very interesting to note that the concept of beauty is not only a product of enviroment. It has been noted that babies respond favorably to what is considered universally beautiful in society and negatively to what one might consider "hideous".
