SPECIAL FORCES
MILIPOL 2017: SCHMIDT & BENDER WINS BUNDESWEHR TENDER
Schmidt & Bender, a German family-run riflescope and optoelectronic system manufacturer founded in 1957 by Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Bender in Fellingshausen, strives to achieve the maximum customer benefit for every hunting, sport, police and military application. In addition, by developing and producing products of the highest quality and reliability, the company is especially appreciated by Special Forces across the globe.

With the 1-8x24 PM II ShortDot Dual CC, Schmidt & Bender says it sets new standards. The company won the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) tender Military Equipment Patrol Configuration G28, Optics ("Rüstsätze Patrouillenkonfiguration G28, Anteil Optik“). According to the German procurement agency BAAINBw 368 units are to be procured.

The compact 2-in-1 sight combines a red dot in the second focal plane with an illuminated reticle in the first focal plane. This combines the advantages of a reflex sight with those of a conventional riflescope, providing an ideal solution for from short up to medium distances. The diffractive red dot technology allows the user, in combination with the CC mode (close combat mode), to use the riflescope as a reflex sight at short distances. In this mode, the scope parallax-free to less than 10m and is characterised by its 1.0-fold magnification. For magnifications over 1.1x, it is parallax-free at 100 m. Since the diffractive red dot is positioned in the second focal plane, the dot size is not magnified and retains constant.

At higher magnifications, the reticle in the first focal plane can be used to determine target distances and object sizes. With a maximum magnification of 8x, the 1-8x24 PM II ShortDot Dual CC provides ideal requirements for target identification and for use up to medium distances. Six different light increments each are available for the red dot as well as the reticle. Thereby the increments 1-3 are optimised for dark conditions as well as night vision devices and the increments 4-6 are optimised for daytime operation.

With a length of less than 30cm and a tube diameter of 30mm, the 1-8x24 PM II ShortDot Dual CC is an extremely compact 2-in-1 system. Visual fields of 35.3m and 4.9m are reached at 100 metres. The elevation and windage turrets are secured against unintended adjustment through a simple locking mechanism. The user has a direct elevation adjustment range of 120cm at 100m as well as a windage adjustment range of +/- 60cm at 100 metres. In addition to the black model, the scope is available in the camouflage colors RAL 8000 and Pantone 7504 M.

The first 1-8x24 PM II ShortDot Dual CCs will be delivered to the Bundeswehr at the end of 2017.

MILIPOL 2017: TAKE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR BACK

Depending upon the operational requirements, or a soldiers role in a mission, he/she generally carries a load of around 30-40kg (body armour, combat weapon, ammunition, other required gear, electronics and power packs). For cold weather soldiers, specialised soldiers or soldiers on longer duration missions, the weight could go up substantially higher.

MKU has developed the Insta Load Distribution System (ILDS) for combat and tactical armour vests that manages and redistributes a soldier carried load. The ILDS lifts the weight of the carried load from the soldier’s shoulder, back and spine and redistributes it to his hips and legs resulting in extreme comfort, greater mobility and substantially enhanced endurance. It has been designed to enable soldiers to carry their loads much more easily, or more load as easily, without hindering his range of motions in any tactical situation.

Made of high quality composites and simple to use, MKU’s detachable Insta Load Distribution System (ILDS) uses no metal parts and comes in a universal size that fits all size and height combinations. It is seamlessly compatible with the patented quick release system of the Instavest for fast doffing and donning of the vest.

It comprises of 2 sub systems - a smart load distribution assembly (SLDA) which can be simply attached to the rear panel of MOLLE compatible vests with a custom ILDS pouch, and an Insta Waist Belt with smart load bearing gear to accommodate the assembly.

SUCCESS IN MKU’S SIGHTS
Officials from MKU have told MONS that the firm is offering its new Netro thermal weapons sight for Indian Ministry of Defence (MOD) and Ministry of Interior requirements.

The two ministries have a need for a new thermal sight which can equip is existing assault rifles, carbines and light machine guns used by the country’s army and paramilitary organisations, such as the Indian Border Security Force. The uncooled thermal sensor offers between six and eight hours of battery life, according to company officials, and can be easily attached to a Picatinny Rail.

Confidential sources at the exhibition told MONS that the Indian MOD may commence the procurement process to satisfy its thermal sight requirement in 2018, although there is no indication as to when the selection process will be completed or whether the MOD will choose to select a sole supplier, or a number of suppliers to satisfy the requirement. Currently the Indian Army has existential requirements for almost 200,000 new assault rifles and carbines, which gives an idea of the potential market size for the NETRO sight.

WEAPONS & SIGHTS AT MILIPOL 2017

The German gun manufacturer Heckler & Koch has recently delivered the first batch of HK416F 5.56x45mm assault rifles to the French Army. The new gun was chosen to replace the French FAMAS weapon which has been in service since the late 1970s. France intends to buy more than 102,000 rifles for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Special Forces, under the under the future personal weapon program worth €168 million (U.S. $184 million). The contract also covers the procurement of 10,767 grenade launchers The rifles in the photo are designated the future sidearm or “Arme Individuelle Future (AIF)”. The HK416F-S is shown above, with a 14.5 inch and the HK416F-C, with an 11-inch barrel, below. Both were displayed at MILIPOL 2017. The HK416 is also in service with the Norwegian military. New versions of the Tavor assault rifles equipped with three of the latest sights from IWI’s sister company Meprolight were on display at MILIPOL 2017. At the front, the 7.62X51mm TAVOR 7 assault rifle. It is seen here fitted with the new M5 Red Dot Sight, with a Bullseye reticle, that allows extended operating time while using a large display window. The second AR is the 5.56x45mm Tavor, fitted with the MYX200 multi-spectral sight. The third is the X95 equipped with the MEPRO MOR, a reflex sight combined with tritium sight and a green or red laser pointer, used primarily by special forces. ODINN Mk2 60 multifunction robotized thermal sighting system from IR&D is a weapon sight combining target acquisition, range and atmospheric parameters measurement, and full ballistic calculation and wind compensation forecast. The sight is powered by a compact LINUX based computer providing ballistic computation and location (GPS based) measurement. OFDINN weighs 850 grams without batteries. The device can operate for four hours on four lithium/lithium-ion batteries. The range measurement is performed at ranges of 6 to 2,000 meters. Photo: Tamir Eshel, Defense-Update.

The Machine Gun Reflex Sight (MGRS) is a non-magnified optical sight that mounts to machine the M2 heavy machine gun or M240 machine gun. The sight provides rapid target acquisition and engagement that allow the gunner to keep both eyes open from a natural shooting position. Accuracy is enhanced by using machine gun range dials that set range ballistic tables to ranges up to 2000 meters. The x3 flip-to-the-side magnifier enables the gunner to achieve one shot accuracy at long range.
