ISLAMABAD:
Trade normalisation between the nuclear armed-neighbours may hit a deadlock as Pakistan has not yet decided to implement its decision of granting the Most Favoured Nations (MFN) status to India.
Under the agreement, Islamabad is scheduled to abolish its negative list of tradable goods by December 31. The list contains 1,209 items that cannot be imported from India.
However, at a weekly news briefing foreign ministry spokesperson told reporters on Thursday that Pakistan was still going through the ‘internal processes’ on granting the MFN status to India.
When asked that Pakistan had already agreed to give effect to its decision on MFN by December 31, Moazzam Ali Khan did not give any time line and instead replied: “Internal processes are expected to be implemented as soon as possible.”

Pakistan’s reluctance to give specific time-frame on MFN issue appears to suggest differences with India on certain matters.
Officials here pointed out that the government’s decision in principle to grant MFN status was conditional to India’s willingness to reduce its Pakistan specific-sensitive list by 30% maintained under the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement.
New Delhi agreed to implement its decision by December 31, 2012 that will eventually allow Islamabad to move ahead with granting it MFN status.

Concerns on India-Russia pact
The foreign office spokesman also voiced serious concern over a recent defence deal worth $2.9 billion signed between India and Russia.
Under the accord signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi earlier this week, India will buy 42 Sukhoi Su-30 fighter jets and 71 Mil Mi-17 helicopters, according to the media.
Khan said Pakistan opposed any move in the region that ‘leads to nuclear and conventional arms race.’
Khar to visit Saudi Arabia
The spokesman said Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar will travel to Riyadh on January 1 at the invitation of her Saudi counterpart.

She is visiting the Kingdom amid rapidly changing regional developments including unrest in Syria, and the Afghan reconciliation process.
Saudi’s invitation is also being seen as an attempt by Pakistan’s long term Arab ally to stay away from Iran gas pipeline.
However, the spokesman dispelled the impression insisting that Pakistan would not abandon the project. “Pakistan is an energy deficient country and we consider the Iran pipeline as vital to meet our energy needs,” Khan emphasised.

Don't expect that to happen any time soon either. It's election year in pak.. & granting MFN to India would mean breaking the vote bank!!

Your comment proves that Indiand do NOT know anything about Pakistan. In Pakistan vote bank does not rest on any India-related issue. Its india were such rehtoric fetch you votes.

on the other hand when Indians oppose cricket between the two countries why do you want MFN?

So you are saying there was no noise from your political class when this issue of granting MFN to India came about?

& where did you get this idea about Indians wanting MFN? Have you seen any official statements asking Pak to grant one?

There are two types of politicians in Pakistan

1. Those who are also involved in trade import/export from India hence they always prefered MFN and free trade with India since they get rich at the cost of Pakistan.

2. Those who are against any such move at the cost of Pakistan and they want fair treatment for Pakistan hence they oppose it.

3. As far as Pakistani politics is concerned its more feudalism/family based and people vote for these families. In many cases the politicians even buy votes. Pak elections are never and can never be based on anything related to India.

Ask your govt and your members on this forum how many times they grinned at Pakistan for NOT giving MFN status

First priority should be to fix the energy crisis , and once local Industries have sufficient energy , only then MFN status can be granted for equal competetion for local industries

I Completely agree that Local Industry should not be destroyed just to please Import and Export traders

We expect politicians to do their Job and fix the country first before offering MFN to other countries

You may be right that we may not have much idea about pakistani political system.... But when everyone agreed for MFN one of PPP MP went to zardari and asked to hold it for some more time....( i read this in one of the pakistani online news paper - either thenews or Dawn) I dono what was his reason.... Any way it doesnt matter much ..... If it does, as the trade improves i am sure both the nations will be on a win win situation.... But then there will be some lobbies who will loose and they will try to oppose any move ...... anyway if pakistan doesnt wants to give.... have the courage to tell.......

Now for the bolded part..... Just check up with your sources where is your cricket team these days....... ( I am not talking about ghar jamai - the entire pakistan team) :)

After 5 years of moronic frustration, India at last felt it was on fault thus our cricket team is in India.
But still war monger extremists in India oppose the sports

The reason for the above is simple..... Both the nations will be on a win win situation with improving in trade... there are always chances of reduction in hostilities.... May be slowly the trade will take over the trust deficit come down..... I am sure the sane members want to have a peaceful relationship with pakistan and thats the way to go..... But then Some people doesnt understand that...

i am for al improvement between the two countries but on equal footing.

If India wants free trade and at the same time does not allow Pakistani sports then its a BIG NO.

Ma'am economy is one of the basic area which if boosts, helps in normalizing the relations. Being emotional in International Politics is suicide.

First I don't see the connection but even if you make one, India benefits from Pakistan touring India, or more correctly, BCCI benefits from the additional money in its coffers. How does that help Pakistan? India(the cricket team) will not tour nor can any reasonable person ask for that in Pakistan. A neutral ground is possible but scheduling it is likely to remain difficult. So how exactly do you want India to allow Pakistani sports? and how will it benefit Pakistan?
