Manmohan calls up Gilani, offers more help

Thanks you just proved yourself who is doing politics on disasters and who is cheap.
:tdown::sick:
my friend, sorry to say but international diplomacy work like that only. this is your government inability and spineless character providing GOI the leverage. by the way GoI is not doing anything, but world is not blind , they can see what is happening. isse kehte hai apne par per kulahdi marna. Blame your government for the blunder by not replying to Indian offer. GoP is still in dilemma to take or reject. Gop should end the matter as soon as possible. this will dent the image of Pakistan whose image is already tarnished at world level. By the way you were very selective, didn't i talk about your mentality?

. .
i am in favor that it is GoP decision to take aid or not. they have their own apprehensions. so pls don't criticize them and respect their decision. but my i feel pathetic when people accuse india for so called nautanki. i could not understand why, as a neighbor we have the moral obligation to do what we can. GoI did it through proper diplomatic channel without making a fuss by calling a press conference or talking about aid in public. so where is nautanki i cant see.

Understand the repurcursions....This is what your PM said

The Hindu : International : It's beyond us: Gilani

In short he is making a case that this natural disaster is really big and thus world community should come forward as much as they can because we cannot fix it on our own....To this world community started pouring in Aid...Unfortunately the response is luke warm(Pak negative image), on top of that when India offers Aid please tell me on what basis you will reject it??? Just think how will world community see that action???

Now India has not made any remarks...We offered you help by the means of External Affairs Minister and them by Our PM....Now ball in your court to take it or leave it...Let's say Pak rejected the offer....weather we want it or not but people are going to see it like this

- India did a good job by ignoring the rivalry and offering the help..
- Pak could not get beyond politics even for saving her own people...

You might already have seen this news....

US urges Pakistan to accept Indian aid

an expert...

''In terms of responding to a disaster, politics should play no role. You have a country (India) that's willing to help (Pakistan), and... we expect that Pakistan will accept,'' State Department spokesman P J Crowley said.

.
I still think (and I may get yelled at) that help to Pakistan from Indian NGO's should continue. Some things should go beyond politics and animosities

Not much chance that would be accepted either.

Pak unlikely to issue visas to 400 Indian docs ready to help flood victims

ISLAMABAD: Nearly 400 Indian doctors, who are waiting for the Pakistan government's nod to help flood victims, are unlikely to get visas to visit the disaster-stricken country.

Nationalist leaders in Pakistan have welcomed the offer from nearly 400 Indian doctors and paramedics to work in the flood hit areas of Sindh and other inundated parts of the country, saying it would bring a message of love from across the border, but fears are that Islamabad would not allow them to enter the country.

"There couldn't be a better time for this to happen, but there are certain sections that do not want peace and I feel that they (Indian doctors) might not get the permission," The Express Tribune quoted AH Nayyar, president of the Pakistan Peace Coalition (PPC), as saying.

Nayyar criticised the Pakistani authorities for creating hurdles for the Indian support staff.

"While the Indians are trying to get visas, the attitude of our government suggests that their efforts won't be encouraged. The Interior and Foreign ministries will both come up with several security related reasons and eventually, the visas will be refused," he said.

Hey.. Good news

Pakistan accepts India's aid offer for flood relief work

New York: Pakistan has finally accepted India's offer of 5 million US dollars as aid for the devastating floods that have hit the country.

The decision came after days of diplomatic logjam and a stern message from the US on Thursday. Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh also called up Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Thursday and told him that India was ready to do more to assist in the relief effort.

Asserting that there is no role for politics in disaster response, the Obama Administration had said it expects Pakistan to accept the aid offer from India for its flood relief work.

"In terms of responding to a disaster, politics should play no role. You have a country (India) that's willing to help (Pakistan), and... we expect that Pakistan will accept," State Department spokesman P J Crowley said.

And within 24 hours of that remark, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who is in New York to drum up funding from the international community, confirmed to NDTV's Sarah Jacob that the government of Pakistan has agreed to accept the Indian offer and that his government appreciates India's gesture.

Here's more on what Shah Mahmood Qureshi said:

NDTV: Here you have travelled all the way to US to ask the international community to loosen its strings. India has offered aid but Pakistan has not accepted this offer as yet. Surely this is not a time for politics when people are dying.

Qureshi: No, we are playing no politics. To begin with let me acknowledge the fact that Minister for External Affairs Mr. Krishna called me in Islamabad and he expressed sympathy and he condoled with me on the loss of life and offered assistance to Pakistan. According to Pakistan's priorities, I want to take advantage of this connection to thank him and the government of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for this very positive gesture. It is highly appreciative in Pakistan and we have recognised it. PM Manmohan Singh called up Prime Minister Gilani and they have also exchanged views on evolving flood situation in Pakistan. He reiterated the offer made by Foreign Minister Krishna and I can share with you that the government of Pakistan has agreed to accept the Indian offer.

NDTV: So you are confirming that Pakistan has agreed to accept the Indian offer?

Qureshi: Yes.

NDTV: Another worry for international community and India and US is that Islamic extremist groups might take advantage of this opportunity to win over hearts and minds. Is this a worry for your government too?

Qureshi: I think what we saw today that the UN will not permit them to take advantage of the situation. I think the international community is now forthcoming and respondent and they are responding quickly and we will not allow them to exploit the situation.

NDTV: Lastly sir, Indo-Pak ties reached an all-time low after the Mumbai terror attacks. Is this acceptance of Indian aid and the offer from India a new chapter perhaps?

Qureshi: I think the ball was set rolling in Thimpu when the two prime ministers met and they agreed to resume the dialogue. And the meeting that we had in Islamabad was a step forward in that direction. I think this initiative of India is a very welcome initiative and I am looking forward to further engagements with my counterpart to improve the environment and build confidence and to bridge the trust deficit between the two countries.

This is indeed good that Pakistan finally accepted the help India offered. But its so odd that US had to come into play for this acceptance as well. God knows when will we be able to free ourselves from such false ego.

if a man is dying for food , and if any person who is giving a piece of bread will be equalant to God or God's Messnger in that poor mans heart , even if the person giving the bread is his worst enemy.

this is tamil 2 line poem

223 - இலனென்னும் எவ்வம் உரையாமை ஈ.தல்
குலனுடையான் கண்ணே யுள.

Kural-223

'I've nought' is ne'er the high-born man's reply;
He gives to those who raise themselves that cry.

Meaning : (Even in a low state) not to adopt the mean expedient of saying "I have nothing," but to give, is the characteristic of the man of noble birth.

Well this is written in Tamil language by a saint approximately 2000 years back.

Though India still has poverty, we are trying to give some thing so the at least few souls can be saved..

and this $5 millions are not just $5 million bills, these would be in the form of cloths, high energy biscuits and other items that can serve humanity well.

.
Well i for one am very glad Pakistan has accepted the aid offered, despite the initial hesitation. It had really ticked me (and a lot of others) off that politics was brought into this issue. But i am glad sense prevailed in the end. $5m can help thousands or tens of thousands of people.

I dont know if the aid is in cash or materials, but i hope its materials. Cash can be misused but much less chance of materials being misused by crooked politicians.

and i urge all Indian members not to make an issue of this. we gave aid, just like they did a few years back. end of story.

Pakistan's acceptance of Indian aid cautiously welcomed

2010-08-20 16:00:00

Islamabad's acceptance of New Delhi's $5 million aid for the flood victims was cautiously welcomed in Pakistan with an analyst saying that 'the government has done well in putting politics aside and accepting the Indian offer'.

The Indian government announced the assistance for relief and rehabilitation of the calamity hit people of Pakistan over a week ago. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also called up his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani Thursday to reiterate the commitment.

The foreign office had initially said that Pakistan had not outrightly rejected the offer and the authorities concerned were looking into it.

Finally, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, on the sidelines of the UN summit in New York on flood situation, confirmed that the country has accepted the Indian offer.

Former diplomat Zafar Hilali said he was unsure whether Pakistan should have accepted the Indian offer.

He said that India had been accusing Pakistan of exporting terrorism and that has hurt the feelings on this side of the border.

Pakistan, he said, was suffering from one of the worst disasters in history and the Indian prime minister had taken three weeks before calling his Pakistani counterpart.

'It seems the Indian offer is without any sincerity of purpose and the neighbouring country is only playing to the gallery,' he said.

Pakistan's worst ever floods, which took place early this month, have killed over 1,600 people and displaced about 20 million others in the country. The deluge submerged one-fifth of the country, making it difficult for aid workers and officials to provide relief to the victims.

Spokesperson of the main opposition party PML-N, Ahsan Iqbal, reiterated that his party's official stance was to meet this challenge with indigenous resources.

'We should tighten the belt and cut down on the development and current expenditure to raise more than $300 billion.'

To a query on whether the acceptance of Indian offer could bring both countries closer, he said that it would be difficult to pre-judge anything at this stage.

Sajjad Naseer, a professor and a political analyst, welcomed the acceptance of the Indian assistance. He added that the initial reluctance in the backdrop of strained bilateral relations was understandable.

He said: 'However, with the aid pouring in from other countries, the government has done well in putting politics aside and accept the Indian offer.'

Naseer expressed the hope this would help in breaking the ice between the two countries.

He pointed out that the country is likely to be gripped by acute shortage of food resources in the next few months and accepting Indian assistance could help in combating the challenges ahead.

Ali Nawaz, an industrialist, said it was good that both the governments were ready to move on while putting the bitterness aside.

'However, it would be too early to jump to any conclusions,' he cautioned and added that such small gestures could certainly help in easing the tensions.

Pakistan had been unsure about how to respond to the aid offered by India Aug 13.

Krishna described the offer as a "gesture of solidarity with the people of Pakistan in their hour of need", a statement issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad had said.

Sources in the Pakistan foreign ministry had said India's offer was being considered. "We have not rejected the offer outright and a decision would be made soon," a senior official had been quoted as saying.

No Harm with Indian doctors in Pakistan , we let Indian cricketers come to play cricket in Pakistan , doctors will be saving ppl unlike cricketers who give us heart attack

I say let the doctors come in , and do their work We need doctors and helicopters

And all aid is welcomed to help bring food to the most devestated areas

Also our politicians routinely go to UK tours on public funding , so I see no problem with Indian doctors

If they can bring in 1000-2000 tents it would be even better for make shift clinics

This is a devestating natural desaster
