Maha cops are told to learn Urdu, Arabic

TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Pune: With the Maharashtra police increasingly grappling with terrorism, the state police has made it mandatory for recruits in its intelligence wing to learn an Indian language as well as Urdu or Arabic during training in police schools.
Director general of police P S Pasricha said on Monday that these intelligence wing recruits will have to learn a language such as Tamil, Marathi, Kannada and others and also pick up either Urdu or Arabic.
The decision was taken following recent serial bomb blasts in Mumbai in which 200 people died and several others were injured.
It was found that very few officials from the anti terrorism squad (ATS) and state intelligence bureau (IB) knew languages used by terrorist groups.
Following the blasts in Mumbai, TOI had reported on July 14 that the ATS as well as state police department was illequipped as far as personnel having knowledge of Urdu or Arabic was concerned.
Pasricha said the decision will be implemented at all the state police schools.
