Lumped together: Karachi's immigrants want to be counted in the census

This wouldn't even be an issue, if Pakistan had a proper immigration policy.

It will be very interesting to see how many illegal Bengali Bangladeshis, Afghan refugees, and Rohingya from Myanmar are in Karachi. Or at least, how many will allow themselves to be counted.

But will they declare themselves as such for fear of deportation/action?

Will the census even collect legal status info? I know its basically banned in Canada in the census here (so that as accurate total number can be compiled as possible)...the info on illegal numbers are all estimates.

I doubt we'll get an accurate count on them. However, I don't think Bengalis and Rohingya fear deportations, just perhaps harassment from some authorities. It seems that Bengalis, in particular, want to be counted. Afghans, on the other hand, may well fear deportation.

According to the article, the Census has not come up with a way to distinguish illegal immigrants from legal ones, so its statistics on illegal immigrants will be estimates, I suppose.

"Despite the population census around the corner, the government has failed to devise a mechanism to differentiate between legal and illegal immigrants and refugees."

Indeed, the wadera system cannot be eliminated from Pakistan by any human. What more can we expect, when a big political party is itself composed of waderas.

While that azab e ellahi is at it, it should also take out the chaudrys and jagirdars of punjab and especially south punjab and the sardars of Baluchistan. Sara gand aik strike may mulk se nikalo.

I dont think that they can be counted as illegal, as they chose Pakistan over Bangladesh during and after the civil war.
No, they migrated during 1980-1990's; the ones that migrated around 1971 have Pakistani citizenship. Benazir Bhutto tried to get them deported but the Bangladeshi Government refused any of them - creating a crisis. Right now there are 5-7 million of them in Karachi alone.

If you are still burying your dead in Afghanistan, you're an Afghan.

not sure about that, that is a very large number!

When The Express Tribune visited a Bengali settlement in Ibrahim Hyderi, the general secretary of the Pakistani Bengali Action Committee, Habibur Rehman, said 80% of the Bengalis had CNICs but right now of this 80%, the cards of 50% people are not being renewed, increasing their fear that they will not be counted in the national census.

They will be counted but as illegal immigrants.

families those migrated from india before 1970 should have Pakistani citizenship. but unfortunately many of them are now suffering. most of them had identity cards till 2015, but after expiring the ID Card now Govt is not issuing ID card to them. neither they are behari nor bangali they are Urdu speaking. one of my cousin in pakistan is facing the same problem although she has done her school/collage and university education in Pakistan. her father mistakenly mentioned his birth in india and now his entire family are suffering including my cousin (fiance). she is also not getting any job.

i am really wondering there may be alot of people like my cousin.
