At 90pc, census data shows ‘dip’ in Karachi’s population

A very large population of Karachi comes in from interior Sindh, Punjab, KPK, Baluchistan and Azad Kashmir; they retain their residency status in their native cities and are not counted in Karachi even though they live in Karachi and utilize the resources and civic infrastructure of Karachi.

Who in their right mind can deny the population of Karachi to be under 30 million? Karachi is atleast 2x-2.5x Lahore and if Lahore is around 15 Million then Karachi has to be around 30-35 Million!

However, we all know why the marriage of convenience where people living their entire lives in Karachi are counted in their own respective cities......and what a disservice they are doing to the city which is feeding and keep them.

The rule is that people will be counted where they have been living for the last 6 months and if these people have been in karachi for years than they can only be counted in karachi.The rule is same for all of pakistan.

No surprises there.

Could it also be because of covid and anti encroachment operations.During covid the lockdown was quite strict in karachi than other provinces since sindh govt was more in favour of lockdowns.There also been anti encroachment operations which recently took place in mujahid colony.

We used to be 30 students in a class in our school, last year in our reunion, only 11 showed up. All others are settled outside - in other cities and some outside Pak.

Same thing goes for family members and other friends/neighbours.

Nobody said a city of 10 million + was empty.

By that same token, is it not a guarantee that the population of interior sindh is overstated? Is pmln prob doing the same in parts of central punjab most loyal to it?

Most of the population is concentrated in districts central South and East.Malir which makes up more than half of karachi land area has less population.

We are not talking about population distribution of Karachi. If there were a reduction of 15% population in 6 years it would be already self apparent and not a surprise.

It’s not about being empty, but about a “net” population reduction of 10-15% rather a collapse in population in a short period of time wouldn’t require a census to be discovered.

It’s effects would be self evident and a part of public discourse already. You would see it’s impact on housing/rental market, commercial activities and so forth.

only the middle/upper middle class is doing this. inter city movement is also occurring during all of this. and still the population ahs fallen.

In this census though the chief statistician (incharge of the census) said that people will be counted as belonging from the place where they are residing.

So if people from other areas came to Karachi to work and are living there, they will be counted under Karachi population count.

I am pretty sure I read an article about this a while back.

Do you reside in Karachi? If you do then you must know how inaccurate the census count is. If they are actually counting people where they are residing then there must be some other gimmick to count only 50% population of Karachi.

MQM and JI has been voicing concerns that there are many densely populated areas where census has either not been conducted or not conducted thoroughly.

Oh I am not making any statement about the validity of the census or it's accuracy.

Just stating what the guy in charge of the census says.

If he was lying, or if the implementation of the census is not as stated, then this indeed is a very serious issue that needs to be addressed.

I would definitely not be surprised if PPP has fudged the process up for it's own gain.

We all know that the generals occupying Pakistan don’t follow the constitution or any law. We know that they’re planning to rig the elections. In that case why would we believe that Zardari and his goons would conduct a fair census?

It’s a known fact that PPP, Zardari and Sindhi waderas have a huge stake in controlling Karachi with the help of the occupation army. More population means they have to give more budget to Karachi and more seats in provincial and national assemblies.

This census is a joke. Only one under an honest government or under international supervision can be considered acceptable.
