The Indian Navy has sent requests for proposals to four potential foreign contractors to assist it in constructing its second indigenous aircraft carrier, Indian media reported last week.India’s Navy has outlined some of the ship’s specifications in a letter of request to global shipbuilders.

The four companies that received the letter are the US-based Lockheed Martin; Britain’s BAE Systems, French shipbuilder, DCNS; and Russia’s Rosoboronexport state arms exporter.

India has requested a 300-meter long aircraft carrier that displaces 65,000 tons. The Navy also said that the ship should be able to travel at 30 knots and carry 30-35 fixed wing combat aircraft and about 20 rotary wing aircraft.

Unlike India’s existing aircraft carriers, which utilize ski-jump launch systems, the new one, expected to be called INS Viraat, will have a catapult launched but arrested landing (CATOBAR) system, The National Interest wrote on Monday.

It might also use an advanced electromagnetic system to launch fixed-wing aircraft.

Responses to the letter of request are expected by July 22, with potential contractors due to provide technical and costing proposals for the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier-2 (IAC-2), which is likely to be named INS Vishal (Grand).

Lockheed Martin and Russia’s Rosoboronexport are seen as the frontrunners to win the contract.

Hope the Europeans win the award

interesting, I didn't know lockheed martin were into shipbuilding as well.

Does this means if we go for Russian help we won't be fielding EMALS???

I think, navy has got its priorities all wrong

This carrier will cost 5 Billion USD

Navy can get 12 Minesweepers and 76 ASW helis for this price
Or navy can get 4 more SSKs or 2 more SSNs for this price.
Aircraft carrier also require escorts
We have enough escorts for 2 carriers plus other deployments
If we deploy 3 carriers, then we won't have enough spare ships for other requirements.

We need to induct 12 modern SSKs, 12 Minesweepers and 60 ASW Helis before contemplating purchase of a 3rd carrier

Russia will bag this order as they inputs in design of nuclear reactor for this AC is going to be very crucial
i think all this talk about neuclear powerred 65K tonne AC are just hot air like MRCA contract in the end it will be considerred too expensive and their will be yet another but improoved version of "IAC-Vishal class" and thats it :coffee:

Lol yes this is quiet possible too then western design or US might bag this order

SSNs will take time to develop, and they already have a parallel project running on the same. It is not that not inducting this aircraft carrier will expedite that process.

I guess this is second or third report on the tender but it still is not clear for what the consultancy is asked for?
I'm guessing more than propulsion, the companies might be involved with Planes and flight deck detailing. An AC is built around what you are going to fly from it and hence the design of geometry and weight. & if LM wins the contract, we can be pretty sure F 35C are also on the way.
