Turkey Coup: Millions Expected to Join Pro-Democracy Rally in Istanbul

Turkey's biggest city Istanbul braces for the biggest anti-coup demonstration following the July 15 military coup attempt.

Authorities have said the rally should be the last one, marking an end to three-week gatherings of people on the squares Istanbul and Ankara.

The top officials of the country will also be attending, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, and heads of opposition parties.

The event will be broadcast live via giant screens nationwide, but tere will be also a screen in Pennsylvania so "the message will be delivered", Erdoğan is quoted by Hürriyet Daily News as saying.

His words are a reference to US-based Fethullah Gülen, who lives in Pennsylvania and is accused by Turkey of plotting the coup attempt.
Up to 3.5 million Turks are expected to take part in the demonstration.

Millions reach Istanbul venue from land and sea for historic democracy rally

Millions of people have traveled by land and sea to Istanbul’s Yenikapı neighborhood, where a massive joint democracy rally was to be held on Aug. 7 to protest the July 15 coup attempt, bringing an end to three weeks of demonstrations following the failed takeover. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has arrived in Yenikapı in a helicopter alongside first lady Emine Erdoğan.

Former President Abdullah Gül, Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar, who was abducted by the coup plotters during the failed takeover, and the head of Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet), Mehmet Görmez, arrived at the site of the rally at the same time.

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım also arrived in the area in a helicopter accompanied by a Sikorsky military helicopter.

Parliamentary Speaker İsmail Kahraman, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the head of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahçeli have also arrived in the area.

“I am happy because I can see the rise of Turkey,” said the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Devlet Bahçeli, said in his address to millions from all walks of life.

“July 15 is a milestone for Turkey,” he said, praising the citizens strong stance against the coup soldiers at the cost of their lives.

Repeated announcements have been made in the area regarding a ban on carrying party flags or party slogans. Millions of Turkish flags have been seen in the area, as well as the flags of Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Albania and the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Posters of President Erdoğan and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, were also seen hung around the venue.

Strict security measures were taken for the rally, with four warships guarding the area from the sea and helicopters patrolling the area in addition to the hundreds of police officers on duty.

Meanwhile a group of people booed when Kılıçdaroğlu’s name was read out by Orhan Karakurt, an announcer at the rally, as he was listing the participants of the rally, which drew criticism.

“Today is the day to become one. We will open our arms to all the leaders,” Karakurt told the crowd and read Kılıçdaroğlu’s name out once again, which was followed by applause. The crowd also applauded when Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli’s name was read out.

Only Istanbul Yenikapi, 5 million people gathered ! which equals to half of Greece population !
That's what we calls as Turkish unity on crises times (time tested).
That's the reason We beat traitors, enemies inside and outside all times.
It is the main power of Turkish army in difficult times. We have a huge army that none can calculate with numbers !

Don't pretend that you are for democracy in the Muslim World. You guys love dictatorship, Egypt, BD, SA, these are good examples of that. When people in Turkey stand for democracy people like you see dictatorship in it! You are blinded by your prejudice and hatred.

This is what makes the difference. Sadly, Pakistan has yet to show this; but hopefully things will change.
