He will take up the post on June 24, says the defence ministry

The Defence Ministry has named Lieutenant General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed as the next chief of Bangladesh Army.

Lt Gen Shafiuddin, who now serves as the quartermaster general at the Army Headquarters, will take up the post on June 24 and serve for three years, according to a notice issued by the ministry on Thursday.

He will replace current army chief General Aziz Ahmed.

Lt Gen Shafiuddin will be promoted to the rank of general before taking up the position of army chief, said the Defence Ministry notification.

Commissioned in the 9th Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA) Long Course in 1983 in the infantry corps, Lt Gen Shafiuddin previously served as the general commanding officer of Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC).

In 2012, he became the general officer commanding of the 19th Infantry Division.

In his career, Lt Gen Shafiuddin has also served as a director general of the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BISS) and a senior directing staff of the National Defence College.

He also played a key role in UN peacekeeping missions as deputy force commander in the Central African Republic.

Why did the Chowkidar general Aziz get deposed? Thought he getting an extension. Good riddance. No more chowkidars

.
The guy been previously promoted just last year. I don't think he had much time to do in ARTDOC.

He was previously promoted just after the Azizgate.

He may have been promoted to Lt Gen last year but he has already served for 37 years. Unless promoted further, Lt Generals have to retire at 38 years of service or 58 years of age whichever comes first. He will reach both milestones this December.
It's not like he was rushed to flag officer level before reaching puberty as was the case with overrated, incompetent clowns like Zia, Shafiullah, etc.

This guy seems like still very young.

. . .
What did I tell you guys?

Nothing will happen. The government will keep the UN entertained with promises of investigation while dilly dallying to squeeze out just enough time for Gen Aziz to finish his term this July and migrate permanently overseas. A sham investigation will then pick up pace which will scapegoat a few minions.

The UN will use it to save face and avoid having to replace thousands troops specialised in peacekeeping from a country with massive peacebuilding support infrastructure (equipment, training centres, robust procurement and logistics systems in Bangladesh catering to current UN missions) back home.
No other country is this committed to send troops overseas for only $1500/month.

Yes, that's why this is notable. His last post outside of general staff was that of battalion commander, if wiki is correct.

.

I believe they really wanted him to get to COAS chair before he had to retire, even if he was possibly not the first candidate for COAS, but probably safest for the govt after Azizgate.

.
I believe he was seen as otherwise boring, but closest to a career soldier person most distanced from BD's internal politics as he spent whack a lot of years on UN missions abroad, with a good bonus of getting foreign military experience.
