About one in every four infants who die from flu-related pneumonia is an Indian, says new research by the University of Edinburgh published Friday.

The study was led by the varsity and involved 47 researchers from 14 countries. Data from high-income and developing countries was reviewed.

“India is the world leader for pneumonia mortality in under-five children contributing about a fourth of the global pneumonia deaths,” said the study's leader Harish Nair of the varsity's Centre for Population Health Sciences and the Public Health Foundation of India.

"We think that until the widespread implementation of an effective influenza vaccine is achievable, reliable provision of antibiotics and oxygen therapy will substantially reduce mortality associated with flu," he added.

The estimates were based on influenza and pneumonia data from Ballabgarh in north Indian state of Haryana.

According to the study, annually, more than 3.7 lakh Indian children under the age of five die as a result of pneumonia and as many as seven percent of those die after contracting flu.

“90 million cases of seasonal flu occur in under-five children each year globally and 20 million of these are flu-related pneumonia resulting in 1 million hospital admissions,” said the study.

Although about 6,000 flu-related pneumonia deaths occur in hospitals, as many as three times this number could be occurring at home, researchers estimate.

The data used in the study suggests that the extent of the flu epidemic and associated pneumonia deaths could vary widely each year - within India and the rest of the world.

With vaccines being available for the common bacterial causes of childhood pneumonia, the bacterial pneumonia rates have started to decline, the study says.

India Among 15 Nations Tops in Child Pneumonia Deaths: IVAC Study - Breastfeeding for six months, early diagnosis and medicine, effective health delivery and smoke-free cooking could prevent the deaths in developing countries Hyderabad ,Nov 21: India, an emerging economic superpower along with China in Asia, but with below 1 per cent of its GDP spending on public health, registers the highest number of child pneumonia deaths in the world.

“As many as 3- 4 million child deaths could be prevented by accelerating use of pneumococcal vaccines in all developing countries over the next decade,” says A Pneumonia Progress Report-2011 released recently by the International Vaccine Access Centre(IVAC) under the John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health(USA).

China however tops the list of countries with 99 per cent of children immunized for Pertusis as also Measles in 2010,

Relax.

At the end of the day, you would know better about your country than I would.

I'm just giving suggestions. Don't know what extra freedom you have compared to the Chinese though.

Well we can elect our own leaders to start with and criticize them without the fear of secret police knocking on my door at night.

.
Dude if you have a chance pls check our currency note. The denomination is printed in 15 languages + English +Hindi. Its a small hint of how diverse the nation is.

I have been to India a couple of times including a backpacking trip to South and North India.

I know how "diverse" your country is. Personally, I don't find the people as diverse as being said here.

India is a uniquely beautiful place though, I'll not deny that.

Why So?.......

At the same time powerful politicians can send their goons to beat the crap out of their protesters in the great democracy of India.

Choose one.

Voting rights or far better standard of living for you and your family?

But of course, having both would be ideal. But conditions in China are no where as bad as being described here.

The police knocking on the door is a 1970's story, mate

but why those corrupted politician are still sitting pretty in your parliment sucking your blood and made your country one of the worst corruption country based on global corruption index.why didnt you throw them out of the government,it seems like there is nothing you can do about it.it's been like this from the very beginning of Indian independence.

Don't blame me, I come from Malaysia where Kuala Lumpur is basically the whole of Asia fit into a city

Even New York City or London has a more racially diverse mix than any city in India.

As a die hard democrat I would chose this one.I firmly believe that selecting better leaders can lead to better condition for the country. Anyways India is a an old nation but a very young democracy. People sometimes are expecting the same results from our democracy as that of other successful western democracies which took more than a century to perfect itself.

Now they use modern technology. Why can't CPC explain the reason why they feel the need to ban Facebook, Twitter and Youtube in the country.

China cares more about her people than India in every aspect.check the human development index.

.
Indian people have a habit of protesting every possible developmental proposal for selfish reasons. We don't think of larger good of the nation. A case in point is FDI proposal in retail. I wish we could be like China where people are more aware of needs of a nation

Bcs its our fault. In a democracy the ultimate responsibility lies with the people of the nation. Anyways we don't expect a benevolent dictator to ride down the clouds and set all things straight in this country.

Umm. Your suggestions have been taken in a good spirit. I value media freedom which is most important; capable of toppling governments. Politics in India can be very partisan to an outside observer, but it has its uses. Opinions even of Arundhati Roy or Prashant Bhushan are heard, and they are not packed off to gulags.

We have had our own ugly experiment with less democracy. That issue has been settled.

How much the govt doing to educate the masses? Why can't they publish a full page advt explaining this decision instead of vested interests taking advantage of the situation.

Anyways I am not a great fan of malls. The less the better. Nothing can beat the shopping in a Bazar experience.

If that's what you feel is best for your country, I respect that.

Who said I agree with China a 100%?

Every country has it's flaws, no one is perfect. Even India has it's flaws.

But more than anything else, I really admire East Asia's economic performance (China, Singapore, Hong Kong). It's in their culture, a strong business mindset.

In Malaysia there's a phrase, "If you want to be rich, follow the China-man". If you mixed with Chinese people in real life, you would know.

But sorry Chinese brothers, gotta say.. Youtube, Facebook, and Twitter are the best inventions of the internet. You're missing out :P
