A 'diplomat' is a far superior cover for an intelligence officer than as a 'journalist'. Think about how much state protection is available for a diplomat. Why do you think that during the Cold War, Soviet embassies are filled with 'cultural attaches'?

Diplomats have at their disposal protected cases where they can store their documents and whatever with impunity. Appearently i am actually seeing this trend now a days, a lot of white dudes are dating asian girls. Anyways getting back to the topic, i think this was an amazing gesture by Bill Clinton. I have immense respect for this man, i met him once at an Aids Awareness Conference here in Toronto and i was very impressed by him. There is a difference between an intelligence officer who poses as a 'journalist' versus a genuine journalist who decided to cooperate with an intelligence officer, aka a 'spy', for whatever reasons. So just because a 'journalist' turned out to be a spy that does not mean the charge that Daniel Pearl was a 'spy' was a valid one. A spy may poses as an engineer but does that mean all engineers are spies? So as far as adopting a successful cover goes, a spy is better off posing as a 'cultural attache', hence earning himself diplomatic protection, than adopting a 'journalist' cover, which would give him no state protection at all.

Did I say all journalists are spies. If you want to defend to Daniel Pearl then it is a different issue. He may not be spy but there were confirmed news about his special assignment and his “activities”
