Taliban kill two soldiers in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Taliban militants ambushed a military convoy late Thursday in Pakistan’s troubled northwestern city of Peshawar, killing two soldiers, security officials said.

The incident took place as the convoy passed through Matani village on the outskirts of Peshawar, the main town of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a province bordering Afghanistan which is rife with Taliban and Al-Qaeda-led militancy. “Militants opened fire on the military vehicles, two soldiers died and one sustained injuries in the attack,” a military official in Peshawar told AFP, requesting anonymity as he was not authorised to talk to the media.

A second security official in Peshawar confirmed the attack and told AFP that troops had cordoned off the area and launched a search operation. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but Taliban militants are active in Matani and other areas around Peshawar.

In two separate attacks Thursday, unidentified gunmen opened fire on NATO supply trucks passing through Khyber and Peshawar, killing two drivers, local officials said. afp

PSO to set up refinery to help meet energy needs

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan State Oil’s (PSO) efforts to set up state-of-the-art oil refinery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, having capacity to process 40,000 barrel per day would go a long way in meeting the growing energy needs.

The facility, expected to be fully commissioned by 2016-17 will be set-up through a public private partnership and will utilise crude oil from nearby indigenous supply sources for production of POL products conforming to Euro IV standards, sources reveal.

‘Establishment of this refinery will help improve the overall availability of POL products across the country as well as result in sizeable foreign exchange savings for the nation and it shall also increase PSO’s operational base through diversification in the midstream segment and lower distribution cost in the related supply envelopes,’ the sources added.

In addition to these benefits, the sources said this refinery will also help create job opportunities for the local populace as well as professionals from various technical backgrounds, adding it is also expected that substantial foreign direct investment will also take place as a result of this project. app

WHAT SINGLE ACHIEVEMENT CAN PROPEL PTI TO DIZZYING HEIGHTS ?

Since the announcement that PTI will form govt. in KPK, several optimistic and pessimistic views have been expressed. As a lover of PTI ideology ? the question came to my mind today is as stated above.

In my view, if PTI wishes to reach heights in a very short time then it must focus on social justice and justice for poor.

I agree that economy, peace, jobs, health and education are other main objectives that need to be achieved. However, despite the best efforts, these objectives (even if fulfilled) will take a long time to bear fruits for PTI.

On the other hand, if justice can be provided to poor and weak in the society then only a few cases will make big headlines in national media. This will bring all the poor and the weak in the whole country to unite and stand firmly behind PTI. It is also one of the election manifesto of PTI ("we will fight against ZULM and every ZALIM).

This achievement will also be unparallel in Pakistan. It is not expected from PMLn or PPP to provide justice to poor and weak in Punjab and Sindh. Both parties are reflective of status quo.

In my view this single achievement can prove to be a game changer for PTI in a very short time.
