Khabib Nurmagomedov’s paycheck withheld over UFC 229 post-fight brawl

The paycheck of mixed martial artist Khabib Nurmagomedov has been withheld after officials began their investigation into the brawl which broke out after his UFC 229 fight with Ireland’s Conor McGregor, FOX Business has reported.

The Russian picked up a comprehensive submission victory over his Irish counterpart in the fourth round of the fight. After the victory, he then went on to attack McGregor’s entourage.

The dazed Irish fighter was attacked in the ring while chaos broke outside the ring.



Nurmagomedov in his post-fight press conference said that his opponent had targeted his religion and country before the fight.

“He talked about my religion, he talked about my country, he talked about my father,” Nurmagomedov said. “He came to Brooklyn and he broke bus. He almost killed a couple people. Worry about this [expletive]. Why people talk about I jump on cage? Why people still talk about this? I don’t understand.”

Nevada State Athletic Commission said that the Nurmagomedov was to receive a $2 million guaranteed base salary for the fight.

Nurmagomedov is to be paid a share of revenue from pay-per-view sales but his portion of the proceeds is unclear. McGregor was paid a base salary of $3 million for the fight.

UFC officials have yet to announce if Nurmagomedov or members of his camp will face internal discipline for the brawl.

“The Nevada Athletic Commission pulled footage from us and there’s an investigation going on,” UFC President Dana White said at a post-fight press conference. “They are withholding Khabib’s purse, they are not withholding Conor McGregor’s, “They looked at the footage and felt that there was no need to withhold his purse, and they’re keeping Khabib’s.”

The commission’s executive director Bob Bennett confirmed that a “full investigation” into the post-match brawl is under way. White has said that the Russian fighter can face suspension or be fined for his role in the brawl.

@django you saw the fight? I was really surprised about one thing more than what others are talking about here.which was his punching power. I think he lost it there more than the grappling of Khabib (which was fantastic no doubt). McGregor did not have the hands. Rocked Khabib momentarily just once.

No did not watch the fight Doc, only the aftermath,,,in regards to McGregors punching, he pushes with his punches (arm puncher), their is no real snap their ,though I will admit his timing and sense of distance is pretty good.Kudos Doc

Usually I don't watch fighting sports but I watched this match to see what the fuss was all about. It was boring, less action and more lock down. The way he charged at him shows he was genuinely furious about all the things Irish guy said. Enduring pain is not difficult, specially when in the middle of fight when you are not much conscious about it. Stamina matters more and the Irish guy lacked it. Not sure if you know but a lot of pro boxers and fighters intentionally or unintentionally are kept in certain conditions to stimulate anger and adrenaline rush which helps them in fights. It maybe possible that McGregor was paid to talk trash for promotion but the reaction from Khabib was 100% genuine. What happened at the end of fight was like double-edged sword. It attracted a lot of free publicity as well as hurt the reputation of UFC brand. And the leadership is genuinely concerned so they will surely take some actions against it.

Iranians are nowhere in the scene when it comes to powerlifting and for your surprise Indians do better than Iranians in almost every weight category and is mainly dominated by Slavs and Nords. Powerlifters of the highest weight category are known are the worlds strongest man. You must have heard of the famous WWE wrestler Mark Henry who was the worlds strongest man at some point. He tried weightlifting too but couldn't even get a bronze. Its because weightlifting other than strength, requires agility (getting under the bar) and technique (posture). Iranians, Koreans are very agile so they do really well. While wrestling, other than strength, technique and agility also requires brains.
