PALAKKAD: Water Resources Minister N.K. Premachandran has said that the State government will appoint an expert committee to go into the causes of the breach of the right bank protection structures of the Moolathara dam and suggest measures to prevent such accidents.
After visiting the dam here on Sunday, the Minister told The Hindu that the government would pay compensation to the people whose houses and crops were damaged in the flood due to the breach.
He said the incident had once again justified the anxiety of Kerala about the safety of old and huge dams still in use in the State.
If a comparatively new and small dam, such as the one at Moolathara, with a water level of just 12 feet, could not withstand the impact of heavy inflows, how could centuries-old dams be still in operation, he asked.
The Minister said that though the Tamil Nadu authorities had informed their Kerala counterparts that the Aliyar dam would be opened and the Kerala side opened the shutters of the Moolathara dam, the breach could not prevented.
He said the dam was strengthened and the regulator-cum-bridge was constructed as part of the inter-State Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PAP) agreement between Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the 1970s. Despite that, the structure could not withstand the pressure from huge quantities of water.
