Indian Vice President Statement
Press Statement by Vice President at Presidential Palace, Algiers, Algeria (October 19, 2016)
October 19, 2016
This has been a very satisfactory visit to Algeria. From the moment of my arrival, my delegation and I have been overwhelmed with Algerian hospitality, including the presence of the dignitaries who greeted me on arrival at the airport.
My meeting with President Bouthflika has been a culmination of my detailed discussions on various topics of mutual interest with the Algerian leadership.
My meeting with His Excellency the President was very focussed and substantial in carrying forward and widening out bilateral cooperation. There was a meeting of minds on both the sides to rejuvenate and reinvigorate our old friendship and recast it to give it a contemporary form to enhance our bilateral cooperation, particularly in sectors such as defence and security, hydrocarbon resources, peaceful uses of atomic energy, space, fertilizers and regular exchange of visits at the political level. In this direction, I have extended India’s invitation to the Prime Minister of Algeria to visit us early.
India and Algeria hold similar or identical views on various international and regional issues. Algeria has successfully tackled the menace of terrorism. Both the countries hold the view that in this century, when we should be focused on the quest for peace, prosperity and development, there is no place for religious fanaticism and terrorism.
I leave Algeria with deep satisfaction. We have been able to rediscover our friendship and agreed to enhance the scope of our cooperation.
