KARACHI, April 12: Four people were shot dead — including a prayer leader on ‘sectarian grounds’ and a local ANP leader in a targeted attack —in the city on Friday.

The prayer leader was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in what the police described as a sectarian killing in Nazimabad on Friday.

The police said that in Nazimabad No.3 Maulana Ghazanfar Ali, 70, was heading for Masjid Noor-i-Eman when two gunmen riding a motorbike targeted him and fled from the scene, District Central SSP Amir Farooqui said.

“The elderly man was shot six bullets — two bullets hit him in the head causing his sudden death,” the SSP told Dawn.

“The killing is surly carried out on sectarian grounds,” SSP Farooqui concluded.

Several spent bullet casings of 9mm pistol were collected from the scene of the crime, he added.

The victim was a resident of Nazimabad, the police said.

The police took the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Later the body was taken to the Old Rizvia Imambargah.

A spokesman for the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen condemned the killing saying that it was a part of ongoing sectarian strife going on in the city.

He said that the slain cleric was a prayer leader in Masjid-o-Imambargah Safina-i-Ahlebait in Toori Bangash Colony in Orangi Town.

The victim’s funeral was held in Rizvia Society in the evening, which was attended by a large number of people.

They added that in Qasba MPR Colony unidentified gunmen came on a bike and opened fire on ANP ward president Bismillah Jan, 45, at the Jamshed Pump near the Quetta Awaran hotel.

College student killed

A teenage college student was killed by an unidentified gunman in Gulshan-i-Iqbal in the early hours of Friday, the police said.

They added that the incident took place in a house located near the Central Pool of Vehicles where the unidentified gunman shot dead 19-year-old Raheel Khan and fled.

DSP of the Aziz Bhatti police station Nasir Lodhi said that when the police reached the house it looked like a robbery scene.

However, after inquiries it transpired that a tenant named Mohsin — a medical student at a private medical college — was living in a single room with a few clothes and a laptop on the top floor of the house, the DSP added.

The victim and his family lived on the ground floor, he said.

The tenant, Mohsin, told the police that he heard a gunshot from Raheel’s room on the ground floor and saw someone fleeing the house.

The police did not arrest the tenant, but he was being questioned, the DSP added.

The police took the body to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

MQM slams ‘undeclared operation’

KARACHI, April 12: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) on Friday called the ongoing raids and search by Rangers and police as state-operation against a particular community just weeks before the general elections.

“We support action against crimes and criminals but for the past few weeks an unannounced state operation is going on,” said an MQM coordination committee statement.

“A few days ago in Malir, security officials raided the house of renowned poetess Gulnar Afreen and arrested her two nephews after brutal torture. They also manhandled women during the raid.”

It said for the past few weeks the law-enforcement agencies had been cordoning off peaceful areas in the name of targeted operation but the localities inhabited mostly by “Mohajir” (Urdu-speaking) community were being targeted. Dozens of innocent Karachiites picked up from areas of Korangi, Malir, Landhi, PIB Colony, Surjani Town, Ranchhore Line and Liaquatabad, had been tortured at ‘government torture cells’, said the statement.

“We are justify to ask why only Mohajir neighbourhoods? The recent acts of the law-enforcement agencies are not only attempts to harass people but also a move to keep them away from electoral process.”

i swear balochistan and even NWFP is currently better than Karachi! reason is simple disarm every party!! and currently the government is doing a good job they started with liyari and now working into MQM areas and ANP areas!!!

PEace in karachi cant be reached tilll dissarming every one at the same time, which is impossible right now...?:disagree:

Karachi cannot be disarmed only by taking actions against some criminals, it needs political will which unfortunately is not there among any of the political stakeholders. There are vested interests and somewhere genuine apprehensions too. If political will can be created then some talks, confidence building and some surgery can do job in weeks.

In U.S race of the dead victim is mentioned. Race or ethnicity is important aspect in forensics. In karachi target killings the ethnicity and background of the victim should be mentioned, doodh ka doodh paani ka paani hojaye ga.
I have watched several programmes where a host goes to karachi to interview people about violence. When they go to mohajir families of victims, the victim is always mentioned member of MQM. They show crying childs and women of the dead MQM member and try to make audience cry. Most of programme covers "mohajir" part. Then give few minutes to families of "pashtun" victims. Due to pardah women are not shown, brothers or male member of family gives interview and the victim is always a labourer, rerrhi wali, shopkeeper, driver etc and is not affiliated with any part..some times even kids are killed.. As men dont cry and small portion of programme covers "pakhtun" part so they doesnt gain sympathies of audience.

The whole media in karachi is controlled and dictated by MQM goons, they simply fear and obey them...check out how they interview ANP leaders and check with how much respect they interview MQM leaders....
And i simply do not watch channels like ARY news which are owned by biased urduspeakers...only punjab-based channels, media persons and anchors are worthy of watching.

Simply put, MQM has the power to do some damage... if it wants to close down the paper presses and news channels it will, and if you ain't publishing in Karachi... your business in dud.

Look how Asma Shiraz i on Dawn news always says Altaf bhai!
