Court unhappy over Karachi law and order report
Two million criminals operating in the city besides militants, says advocate general

Karachi: Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday expressed dissatisfaction over a government report on the law and order situation in Karachi.
The top court resumed the hearing of the Karachi Lawlessness Case, after over year of its instructions to the police and government to improve their performance and keep updating the court about the law and order situation in this financial capital, passing through an unprecedented phase of murders, crimes, extortion and robberies.
The advocate general, top lawyer of the province, told the five-member bench of the Supreme Court that some two million criminals were operating in the city and there was a glut of militants from all over the country. The court rejecting the plea remarked as to whose responsibility it was to check and stop those criminals and militant infiltrating into the city.
The court also inquired about its advice to the government to making a law through which the record of licensed weapons could be maintained and it could be known as to who was keeping as many as 20 licenses.
The government lawyer told the court that the government would put its efforts to get the law in place soon.
Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali was presiding over the five-member bench of the Supreme Court.
The bench was also angry over erecting fortifying walls and barricades outside the President Asif Ali Zardari house and the paramilitary Rangers’ headquarters. Outside the president house a road has completely been closed for public whereas Rangers has encroached a main road causing worst traffic jam during the peak hours.
The court criticised the inspector general of police for moving around with heavy motorcade and police squad for his security whereas the common people were being murdered in the city.
The court observed that the police squads abuse common people on the roads, and ordered that there was no need of squad to the police and it was meant for protection of public. The court also admonished the police chief saying he should quit as IG if he was scared.
Retired justice of Supreme Court Fasihuddin Ahmad commenting on the court proceedings said that it was pathetic that over half a dozen people were being murdered daily in the city and no body was able to stop it.
“Political appointment in the police, incompetent officers and frequent transfers of the police officers were some of the key reasons for law and order,” Ahmad told the Gulf News.
He further said that the Supreme Court could also refer the issue to the assembly asking it to fulfil its constitutional responsibility.

I believe media is not covering Police and Rangers efforts as it should. Ummat is one which covers their activities, however while reading all this stuff, tilt or policy of this news paper must also be kept in mind and analyise the content while keeping that margin. But at the same the facts cannot be denied. Its not only MQM in Karachi which is responsible, its all including ANP, PPP, PAC and various religious organization. It is also a fact that MQM being the big brother in the city has more responsibilities.

KARACHI: An explosion near a checkpost of Rangers force killed four security personnel and injured at least four others in Karachi’s Korangi neighbourhood on Wednesday, DawnNews reported quoting security officials.

Initial reports suggest that at least eight people including security personnel sustained injuries when a bomb exploded near headquarters of the Rangers force in Korangi No.5 area.

“It was a bomb blast, the target seems to be a van of carrying soldiers,” police official Karim Khan told AFP.

The blast happened near the Rangers’ headquarters in the city’s eastern district of Korangi, he added.

Four of the injured succumbed to their wounds when they were being taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Meanwhile, Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan has claimed responsibility, saying they targeted the Rangers for working against them.

“We received seven wounded soldiers, three of them expired later,” senior doctor Seemi Jamali said, adding that two were in critical condition.

A spokesman of Rangers has confirmed the number of causalities and said that a vehicle of the Rangers forces, with a dozen personnel on board, was returning from duty when attacked by unidentified miscreants. The vehicle was completely damaged in the blast, said the spokesman, adding that a hand grenade or a cracker was hurled at the vehicle.

The spokesman identified the deceased as Irfan, Amanat, Majid and Saifullah.

The blast spread fear among the locals residents as shops and small businesses were reportedly shut after the incident.

Police and security agencies have cordoned off the site and the media is prohibited to enter the area.

“It was an attack on the Rangers’ pickup truck,” senior police officer Tahir Naveed confirmed. “An explosive device, most probably a hand grenade was hurled into the moving van causing the casualties,” Naveed told AFP.

The attack might be linked to operations being carried out by Rangers against militants and criminals gangs in the city, he added.

Taking notice of the incident, Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (retd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso and Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan have ordered a quick probe report of the blast.

The caretaker PM, in a statement, said that such cowardly acts would not deter the resolve of the law enforcement agencies of wiping out the terrorism from the society.

Recent violence in Karachi and elsewhere has fuelled fears of instability as the country heads towards general elections in May.

The city of 18 million, which is Pakistan’s business hub, last year saw around 2,000 people killed in violence linked to ethnic and political tensions, its deadliest toll in two decades.
