KARACHI: Construction conglomerate Bahria Town will give Rs42 billion loan to Sindh government for Karachi Metro Bus project.

This was decided in a high level meeting, where Asif Ali Zardari, Bahria Town Chairman Malik Riaz, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and members of the provincial cabinet unanimously approved the Karachi Metro Bus project.

According to a press release, the meeting called for early completion of the bus service that will be run by Daewoo, on the lines of ones launched in Lahore and Islamabad.

The 54-kilometre long two routes of the bus service connect Super Highway on the outskirts of the city with Merewether Tower at the start of MA Jinnah Road and II Chundrigar Road in the business and financial hub of Karachi and Super Highway with airport via Malir Cantt.

The estimated cost of the grand infrastructure project is around Rs70 billion. Bahria Town has agreed to give Rs42 billion to Sindh government on a 154-year loan to complete the project.

Sindh government will seek Rs20 billion from the federal government and invest Rs8 billion from its own resources.

The provincial government has completed the feasibility study, acquired environmental impact assessment report from the Environmental Protection Agency and finalised the design of the project in the last three months, the press release said.

The Sindh government has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Daewoo bus company which will run its hybrid buses on the route along with all the operational matters to ensure high quality service, press release said.

Practically free money? Seems fishy when characters like Malik Riaz and Zardari are involved.

I guess 150 years to complete the project, that should be enough for Sindh government.

Lol good one. Just don't bet on it. PPP is ruling Sindh so there is a high chance that these billions might end up buying luxury properties in Dubai or London.

yeah you are right sound fishy fishy :D

In the meeting Chairman Zardari presented his foreign bank account number to Mr Malik and asked if money can be transferred before lunch.

How can federal and sindh gov. take loan from an individual forany government project. The metro bahria town is planning to invests on projects which are already under planning by nespak. Now bahria town is dictating its terms to government. Malik riaz changing the route of two metros, and making them start and end at bahria town, a location 25 km out of city on high way.

Malik riaz also asking federal government to invest 20 billion in his private project

If any pvt. Group want to invest in any project, they can do it with due approval. However, in this case bahria town is taking over the metro projects in Karachi city and offering loan to sind gov. On its own terms and condition with high interest rate.

Bahria town have to much money, and who gives loan for 154 years?

I think they should allow the private investors to invest and not Govt. to invest. More over have a bigger plan with more investment and sell its 30% share in KSE to gain public attention. I am sure let alone Bahria town owner can handle this as he has money.
