Lieutenant General Jai Prakash Nehra, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, flagged off the Joint Indo-Poland Army Mountaineering Expedition to Mount Nun (7135M) on 26 August 2013 from New Delhi.
The expedition to Mount Nun, 7135 m (23410 ft) is a joint venture between India and the Republic of Poland, under Major Jay Prakash of Indian Army as the Expedition Leader and 27 other climbers including eight from Polish Army. The team has been selected after a rigorous training and stage wise selection programme, to attempt to summit Mount Nun from 13 -19 September 2013 amidst freezing temperature, thin air, nerve wrecking blizzards, avalanche prone slopes and gigantic crevasses.
Mount Nun is located near Suru Valley of Zanskar Ranges and is about 250 Km east of Srinagar in the Leh region of Jammu and Kashmir. The Nun Kun Mountain Massif comprises a pair of Himalayan peaks : Mount Nun, 7135 m (23,409 ft) and its neighboring peak Mount Kun, 7077 m (23218 ft) separated from the former by a snowy plateau of about 4 Km length. Mount Nun is the highest peak in this part of Himalayan range on the Indian side of the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
The team will take off for Leh on 27 August 2013 and will reach the last road head at Thangol on 30 August 2013. Four camps will be established en-route before launching the summit attempts.
