He doesn’t - but cant help self aggrandizement... well, he is a manager of a Truck lot now so it is a BIIG position with massive exposure to defense matters - walmart purchases their delivery trucks from him, delivery trucks that on days go to Fort Worth Walmarts .. where LM employees shop.. so he knows things no one with actual R&D experience can.
Interestingly, the Chief of staff of the PLAAF when first showed the F-16 in Pakistan was found to be using his fingers to size up the HUD - that caused the US contractors on site a lot of concern.

The shape of the hud can guide on whether it is a wide angle HUD with a large FOV and possibly the type of combiner it uses.

Based on framing looks like single crystal display is also part of block 3 upgrade

Hopefully the Block 3 has a layout similar to the Gripen E, or at least the level of software integration between the sensors (showing only what is necessary to the pilots, intuitively).

jsf has removed hud as helmet display provided everything so no need for HUD
Yes - but that also created a gap in redundancy with the helmet in that in case of malfunction in the helmet the pilot has to go heads down.
So the result is that the GEN-III helmet costs $400k and the F-35 cannot be flown without it.

On the flipside, the F-15EX has both a HMD and HUD but on a Ferry or FCF a pilot can wear a plain jane light HGU-15 and still fly.

The Block III version, which has been in development for over 2 years now is characterized by an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, helmet-mounted targeting system (HMS), an advanced targeting pod, data links and beyond visual range weapons. With its new integrated frontal infra-red search and track sensor the aircraft will have the capability for quick information sharing and network-enabled operations that facilitate earlier detection and interception of enemy aircraft.

Defence Updates- Pakistan/ JF-17 Block-III
Thunder Block III has been developed with the latest version of F-16 V Fighter Jet in mind as a benchmark. The new variant of JF-17 is being fitted with an AESA radar, helmet-mounted display and sight system.
The JF-17 is a 4++ generation multirole fighter aircraft being made in Pakistan with technology acquired from Chengdu Aircraft Co., of China. JF-17 Block III aircraft will also feature a new electronic warfare system, upgraded avionics including a three-axis fly-by-wire digital flight control system, and a helmet-mounted display and sight system.
The latest variant is expected to be powered by a better engine, as compared to Klimov RD-93 turbofan engine which has been fitted in Block I & II of the aircraft. The JF-17 Block III has an approximate combat radius of up to 2000 kilometers without refueling and can reach a maximum speed of up to 2500 km/h (without dropping fuel tanks).

The aircraft can alternatively be armed with air-to-air, air-to-surface, and anti-ship missiles. It will also be able to fire beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles (BVRAAM). An unnamed BVRAAM has already been test fired by the PAF a few months ago.
The Block III version of the Thunder will allow information sharing between the fighter and other platforms. This will increase the efficacy of the entire combat system in defending against strong adversaries.
The production of the aircraft is already underway. The Block III is expected to carry a price tag less than half the price of the latest generation F-16 V fighter jet and features, manauveraility and speed similar to that of the US aircraft.
12 JF-17 Block 3 will roll out in current year that is one unit each month, so from start of year we are near to 3 units produced in Pakistan

I don't think IRST has been officially confirmed, but what I find more interesting is the potential of the new IR based MAWS sensors distributed around the aircraft - 2 for the rear hemisphere located at the top of the fin, and 2 for the forward aspect hemisphere, located on either side of the air intakes. Depending on the sensitivity and quality of the IR MAWS sensors, they could be used to track other aerial threats such as fighter aircraft, in addition to missiles. This would be similar to the distributed aperture suite (DAS) on the F-35 (note that the F-35 doesn't have an IRST, but relies on its DAS instead). All conjecture, and highly dependent on the quality of the IR sensors and signal processing capabilities, but it would certainly alleviate the need for an additional IRST on an otherwise small forward fuselage volume of the JF-17. Just a thought.
