JF-17 Thunder Multirole Fighter [Thread 7]

As the information suggests PL15 can travel 300+ KM to reach its target - and here the question would be - how long would it take to reach its target? Because of significantly long travel, would the target aircraft not see it coming and not take preventive measures much in advance?
- Flying at Mach 4 (~4939kph), it would take 109+ seconds to reach a target at 150km. Since Mach 4 is the max velocity achieved only on a straight line hence a + at the end.

- For the sake of comparison an AMRAAM has reportedly an RCS in the range 0.1-0.5 sq.m. At such high speeds, in most cases, it would be game over for the target by the time the missile gets detected.

There is no second thought that an aircraft with all the equipment is built-in pods but then it has disadvantage as well. First of all it cannot be light or medium wright it has to be heavy twin engine aircraft and with all such pods the cost will also be really high. With limited budget we cant afford that luxury.
IRST can be in-built, nose even.
In case of F-16, it has 5L and 5R stations for carrying different pods.
Chin is another place where a pod can be carried.

As for weight, armament is usually more heavier than pods. Even then if weight is an issue, aircraft can take off with minimal fuel requirement and get refueled in the air.

Gripen E and Block 60, J-10B/C are prime examples

Gripen has 10 hard points, while JFT has 7 hard points.
The dry and after burner thrust are almost same. Yet Gripen carries more armament and has a dedicated hard point for pod.

JFT should have IRST in nose. A dedicated pod under chin for self protection since it already has lesser pylons. But these are structural changes after all.

I was referring to nose IRST examples.

Is it not possible to modify the structure to accommodate an IRST on nose ?

Agreed, with respect to IRST pod as with the 5th generation aircrafts in the market IRST is going to become necessity but no other pods are recommended to be incorporated within airfram. Plug and play is the best solution.

Wings sir, wings. Gripen has less wing loading. More lift at same speed/ thrust..

. .
Canards and composites too.

But all this increases costs.

Correct. Btw, I would think wing loading includes both. Canards are lift surfaces so they should appear in the denominator and composites impact weight so their effect should appear in the numerator.

Why does thunder sound so quiet as compared to mirage ?

(keep afterburners out of this, given the same amount of thrust being generated and the velocity is also similar)

Beacuse the Mirage's Snecma Atar is a turbojet compared to the RD-93 which is a turbofan engine. Turbofan engines are always quieter than their turbojet counterparts for any given level of thrust. Its just the difference in mechanism how they work.

All the air entering a Turbojet is combusted with fuel whereas in a turbofan engine just a part of air entering the engine is combusted whereas the rest of it is just compressed to leave the engine at higher pressures, resulting in a better fuel economy and lesser sound.

A Turbojet emits a relatively smaller amount of air quickly, which is a far less efficient way to generate the same thrust by the turbofan which emits a large amount of air more slowly.

OMG :o::o::o:

Why did i never thought of that, all this time i never researched on mirages engines, thought that they would also be turbofans since this has become standard.

Well, feels so great hearing thunders flying so quietly while mirages screaming like ladies.

The first run of Atars was around the time we got independence and are pretty much the same age as Pakistan. Could well be sold as antiques these days! 8-)

Those 7 billions are not just for jets sir. I thinks weapons, other systems are also included
On internet, Price of JF 17 Blk 3 is estimated to be $32 million

U mean V2 can lock the prey at 130km?
Total deal is well above 9 b $(7.8b eruos)

Even at 32m you get 220 thunders for 7billion
