JF-17 Thunder Multirole Fighter [Thread 4]

MERs can be used to carry 250KG & 500KG PGMs also, we did saw JF-17 prototype with MERs having 2 bombs on each MER under each wing.

The recent FIA had a JF-17 model displayed with an anti-hip missile under the inner wing pylon, also the static display had a C-802 displayed at the inner wing pylon, thus JF-17 can carry 2 anti-ship missiles under each inner wing pylon on each wing and if required 3, with one under the middle pylon.

So MERs give you lot of flexibility and you can carry smaller PGM bombs and can engage multiple targets in one sortie.

JF-17 has been designed as a multi-role aircraft, A2A is not its primary role it should be able to do both ground attack as well as air defence, thus it needs to have a payload capacity for taking heavier bombs as well as multiple bombs with MERs.

And with time the strength of the airframe would be more strengthened and composites would help a lot in this regard as they will provide further strength, enabling the JF-17 to take higher load on its inner and outer wing pylons.

Here see an image describing JF-17s load bearing capacity under each pylon.

Thanks for the picture.

In the picture the Anti-ship missile is located on the pylon right next to the middle one. You cannot put the heavy missile on the under-wing pylon (pylon number 6 if counting all of them left to right) due to distributed loading effect and hence you will need to balance the other wing as well. Inner pylon is well inside, right next to where the wing joins the fuselage, probably one of the strongest points. Also note the surface area of wing available for distributing the weight . You don't have that on the under wing pylon.

Last, Pakistan should be developing it's own Anti-Ship missile, because RAAD ALCM, is 1,100 KGs and is too heavy to be deployed on the wings...

Lest, when you take the inner wing pylons for missiles, you aren't left with much space for fuel tanks hence reducing range.

With a bigger plane, you have a bigger, more internal fuel and also stronger wing for more loadings.

Even if we squeeze 5000Kg payload out of JF-17 (which is a lot) JF-17 still cannot be a dedicated bomber......... For precision strikes yes and for that you need to upgrade with longer range FLIR and IRST and Radar, both sea search (for anti ship roles) and Surface search (Mountain warfare, e.g Kargil).

JF-17 is really excellent. PAF should play with it, because we definitely need a squadron for coastal defense......as India is buying MIg 29 and Aircraft carriers.

Jf-17 should be optimized for Anti-ship roles and Air to Air roles with secondary roles of CAS and Interdiction.

J-10 and F-16s can be precision bombers...

NRIET working progressively on JFT's AESA radar and seems confident to defeat the Italian rival again. Remember that NRIET (lab-14 institute) is working on this radar since 2007. The radar is in final testing stages. Just a reminder for nay sayers, this is what Janes's Reuben F Johnson reported in 2008

China's NRIET outlines fighter radar improvements

Like other Chinese companies, NRIET has made progress in upgrading the performance of its systems and has benefited from the advances that China's industries have made in designing more robust and state-of-the-art components. NRIET said that work had started on developing an AESA fighter radar, but that details of this program were classified.

So does tht mean an AESA radar for JFT Blk-II?
If yes thts GREAT NEWS!!

AESA will make JFT a 4.5 gen a/c
I always favored Chinese/local avionics package even if those are inferior.
AESA will add to the competitiveness of JFT, even more.
non the less it was a sweatining news.

Hi, I was wondering if the JF-17 could also get two hardpoints right under the air intakes, like the J-10 or F-16? These could be used for targeting pods and would not chew up an under wing stations. The JF-17 has a cannon on the right hand side air intake, but so does the J-10 and it still has a hardpoint there. Thanks!

Nabil brother i asked u a question will BLK-II use the chinese AESA??

correction - the gun is on port side and the pod would block the gun so its impossible! BUT on the starboard side PAf can add a pylon it will definetly "free" a hard point for weapon/fuel tank use!

Uptill now no body is sure wat Pakistan will Equire after JF17, F16, and FC20 to counter MRCA of India. maybe PAF has nothing in the plan. PAF is well satisfoed with the current fleet.

So far i can only say that there is a probability for second batch with AESA but third batch will definitely have it. First batch is working seemingly well with pulse doppler one.

I think its some arab country where it stopped on way back.......Just like it did 2 or 3 stop when going......Looks at the number plates of cars..

We don't have to wait until blk 2 in anycase.

The main structure to house the radar is the nose. So as long as they are same on all of the production aircraft, AESA can be retrofitted to the older models (with wiring etc) and also to production ones.

The problem is finding the right one. We need a lightweight AESA radar that is not too power hungry. But then we also want it's range to be more than 150Km........why 150?
Because of future longer range BVR AAMs and any potential AWACS killer missile.

Even if we had the EF Typhoon radar, we still wouldn't be able to fit it. So better that PAF issues tender to all the Chinese,European and US firms for AESA radars and gives its specifications.

Much easier to design a plane and put radar in it rather than to make a radar and then design the plane around it!
