If China is manufacturing them, no need for TOT, we can have just overhauling facilities. Engine making is one hell of a job and without any research base, it will be useless for us.

i totally disagree we should acquire every thing with tot no matter what it cost.
the above suggestion is good for other technologies but in defense
we have to build our own infrastructure for research and development form a built to thermonuclear
and
one day we have to do it than why not to day

If JF-17 becomes a selling product, then may be, but if it doesn't then we will have an extra burden on us, as the plant would be there but the orders would be much less, so it won't be any help.

But if there are sufficient order of engines and China allows for Pakistan to make them to meet orders, then no issues.

As said, engine manufacturing is no easy thing, it needs lot man power, physical infrastructure and raw material.

Of all the things on an aircraft, it is the engine that suffer the greatest structural and environmental stress for the longest duration. The engine is the item with the greatest amount of moving parts that MUST be concentrated in one REMOVABLE component. When the pilot move the throttle, he expect the engine to respond immediately, making engine controls one of the most difficult engineering challenges in aviation. Materials wise, we need alloys that can handle the high temperatures but because metals expands and contracts with temperature variations, this property complicate manufacturing and assembly tolerances and equally important field condition maintainability. We need fasteners to remain secure no matter what temperature they may encounter. May be it is unavoidable that some engine designs demand different fastener grades at different parts of a jet engine but this would complicate logistics. An indigenous high performance jet fighter engine program is not an easy endeavor.

they say metallurgy and ceramics are the key to a dependable a/c engine!

The materials you cited are for the blades and yes...

"Crown Jewels," Feature Article, February 2006
Friedman quotes Sir John Rose, Roll-Royce's CEO, on the components the company still makes: "The 25 percent that we make are differentiating elements. These are the hot end of the engine, the turbines, the compressors and fans and the alloys, and the aerodynamics of how they are made. A turbine blade is grown from a single crystal in a vacuum furnace from a proprietary alloy, with a very complex cooling system. This very high-value-added manufacturing is one of our core competencies."

As Sir John Rose points out, single-crystal turbine blades are valuable to the companies that make them, as a high-technology—and profitable—product. Since they were invented and introduced, their unmatched resistance to high-temperature creep and fatigue have helped to advance the performance and durability of modern gas turbines. Were it not for the cost, they would replace thousands of conventionally manufactured turbine blades in higher-temperature applications.
Failures in the developments of turbine blades accounts for a very high rate of set backs.

Intresting lines form the reporter of the above video

"Despite the induction of the aircraft, the engineering team is still working to make it the best aircraft of the world, although its already the best aircraft in the region"

Dun you all thnk its over excitement

.
He was a bit too excited i guess. Good video never the less.

.
Interesting....

1. Electronic Warfare /jamming equipment housing

2. Advanced IFF antennae (kj 8605 is most likely as fitted on J-10)

3. UHF communications antenna
